Who is Ramzi Kassem and why all the fuss?

Kassem is Mayor @ZohranKMamdani’s Chief Counsel, his top legal adviser inside City Hall.

Just days after 9/11, Kassem wrote:

“The perpetrators were probably not driven to their actions by some intrinsic evil or inherent hatred of the good United States.”

He argued that the terrorists’ resentment was “rooted in political realities shaped by our country’s policies.”

Kassem later built a career challenging America’s post-9/11 counterterrorism system. He founded CUNY’s CLEAR clinic and represented Guantánamo detainees, including Ahmed al-Darbi, who pleaded guilty to war-crime charges connected to an al-Qaeda plot.

And then there’s his partner: @DarializaforNY, the DSA-backed Democratic nominee for Congress.

She once posted: “I hate this f***king country.”

And: “I forgot to get napkins so I just wiped my hand on the American flag behind me.”

Quite the New York political power couple: she’s seeking a seat in the United States Congress and he’s advising the mayor of America’s largest city.
