Technical Sergeant John A. Chapman, an Air Force Special Tactics Combat Controller with the 24th Special Tactics Squadron (24th STS), killed on Takur Ghar mountain in Afghanistan on March 4, 2002.

16 years later, in 2018, he became the first airman since the Vietnam War to receive the Medal of Honor, a recognition made possible only after the full account of his final actions came into clearer view.

Chapman was attached to a seven- man SEAL Team 6 element, call sign Mako 30, inserting by helicopter on a recon mission during Operation Anaconda. As their Chinook approached the landing zone, it took a direct RPG hit that threw SEAL Neil Roberts from the aircraft into an entrenched al-Qaeda position below.

The damaged helicopter crash landed in the valley. Chapman and the surviving teammates immediately decided to return up the mountain into a known enemy stronghold to recover their missing man.

What followed was extraordinary. Chapman charged an enemy bunker and killed its occupants, then pressed forward to engage a second machine gun position, where he was severely wounded. In the chaos of the firefight, his teammates, believing him dead, withdrew from the mountain.

More than a decade later, drone footage reviewed by the Air Force revealed a different reality. Chapman had only been knocked unconscious. When he regained awareness, he was alone, wounded, and surrounded on three sides in the freezing darkness, yet continued fighting for nearly an hour.

When a Chinook carrying Army Rangers approached to attempt a rescue, enemy fighters moved to bring it down with RPGs. Chapman engaged them, drawing their fire onto himself and away from the aircraft. The helicopter still absorbed heavy fire and crash landed hard, but investigators concluded that his actions gave the Rangers aboard a chance they would not otherwise have had. He was killed in that final exchange.

He was initially awarded the Air Force Cross. The footage review later changed the outcome. His teammate and SEAL element leader, Britt Slabinski, who received his own Medal of Honor for the same battle, had been at the center of the controversy surrounding Chapman being left on the mountain, and personally endorsed the upgrade.

Seven service members died on Takur Ghar and in the surrounding fight that became known as the Battle of Roberts Ridge. Chapman fought alone, wounded, in the snow, and kept fighting until there was nothing left to give.

Having empathy for the illegal immigrant does nothing if you have no empathy for those that end up becoming victims of their crimes. Strong borders are neccesary. Allow immigration through legal channels for those truly interested in integrating into the host nation’s culture and society. This is the only way. The western world and our way of life is currently under invasion.
