The FRSC Traffic Fine SMS Scam:
How It Works & How to Protect Yourself

​If you recently got an SMS saying "FRSC: You have a new road traffic offence record that requires handling", do not click the link.

Here is how scammers are using smishing (SMS phishing) to target Nigerian motorists, and why thousands are falling for it:

​1. Psychological Manipulation:
Unlike obvious crypto or money giveaway scams, this trick plays on panic and compliance. Nobody wants unpaid fines or issues with law enforcement, so the urge to click and "check the evidence" is high.

​2. The Fake Domain (Domain Spoofing)
The text directs you to cloned links like https://t.co/UrxeFtyo0H instead of official channels.

● ​Official Nigerian government platforms end strictly in .gov.ng (e.g., https://t.co/LMd5ounYJc). Scammers heavily rely on cheap top-level domains like .top, .click, or .cc.

3. The Trap (Credential Harvesting)
Once on the cloned site, it asks for a tiny "processing fee" or fine. The moment you enter your debit card number, CVV, and OTP, attackers harvest your details in real-time to drain or clone your account.

How to Stay Safe:

1. ​Verify, don't click: Never clear traffic fines via SMS links. Official FRSC payments are handled via Remita (under MDAs), direct bank branches, or official Sector Command POS terminals.

2. Check the sender: If it's an unverified phone number or strange link, ignore it.

3. Call the FRSC toll-free line (122) to confirm if you actually have a pending ticket.

Stay vigilant, check the URL twice, and share this to keep someone else from getting scammed!
