#OnThisDay, 5 January 1900 nr Colesberg, South Africa, Lt Sir John Peniston Milbanke of the 10th Royal Hussars rescued Corporal Barclay for which he was awarded the Victoria Cross. He was 27 and serving as Aide-de-Camp to General John French during the Second Anglo-Boer War.

Gurkha Loyalty.
Loyalty has long characterised Gurkha service to Britain. During the Indian Mutiny of 1857, Gurkha soldiers were renowned for their service at the Siege of Delhi, fighting side by side with both British and Indian troops to retake the city from the rebels.

July 6th 1904 –John Grant and Karbir Pun climbed 30 feet of sheer rock wall to breach the citadel of Gyantse Jong in Tibet. Both were struck by missiles thrown by Tibetans above and lost their footing and fell more than once. They were awarded the VC and the IOM respectively.

In 1897, 1/King’s Royal Rifle Corps, a RIFLEs antecedent, were travelling on the RIMS Warren Hastings when it hit a rock off Réunion. Thanks to the discipline and calm of those onboard, almost all lives were saved.

There's a wide range of activities going on across all 6 museums of @WMMuseums throughout the week so there's lots to do at Peninsula Barracks!
Due to the weather warnings being extended over Hampshire we will be CLOSED today (Fri) to keep staff and visitors safe.

Our second Victoria Cross story of the day is that of Lieutenant Guy Boisragon, who's outstanding bravery led to the capture of the Nilt Fort (Hunza) on 2nd December, 1891.
