If a sport played more than four competitions it had to be recognized by the National Division of Girls and Women's Sports and the NCAA as varsity, who controlled women's intercollegiate sports at that time.
From the 1960's to 1974, women could only participate in club sports at Western Michigan. Sports available were Field Hockey, Basketball, Track/Field, Tennis, Volleyball, Bowling, Swimming/Diving, Golf, Gymnastics, and Synchronized Swimming. Other options included trips to the …
YWCA or joining a summer league. In 1975, women's intercollegiate athletics finally arrived at WMU for women. Many of the club sports matured into varsity sports…..
Join us this month in recognizing & celebrating the successes and contributions of women in American history and within the WMU community.

We had a great timing hosting our pregame sports showcase this weekend at the @WMU_WBB game for National Girls and Women in Sports Day, while celebrating the 50th anniversary of Title IX. Thank you @WMU_WeMustUnite for helping coordinate!
