The branch line disappeared under the fence into the empty lot next door. Except the lot wasn’t really empty. Buried behind years of overgrown bushes was an old irrigation system feeding a greenhouse that had been abandoned by the previous owner years earlier.

The utility company admitted the line had been connected before I bought the house, but because the branch came after my meter, every gallon had been billed to me.
