Aether is now a verified, local-first CLI language toolchain with a deterministic AETH VM, a seed-hosted compiler path, bounded resources, structural AI-authoring contracts, and one safe typed error effect.
It is complete for the Aether 0.7 milestone, but it is not yet a legitimate public release. The language is usable locally; public distribution still needs packaging, signing, release materials, automation, and broader performance/reliability evidence.

Performance status
No defensible compiler or VM performance claim exists yet. The project correctly avoids claiming speed superiority without a pinned workload suite, baselines, hardware profile, warm/cold policy, and distribution data.

Current observed engineering costs:
-Full self-host validation: ~29.8 minutes.
-Direct CLI self-forge: ~9.5 minutes.
-Release CLI build: ~15.6 seconds.

The next performance work should establish a benchmark harness before optimizing compiler or VM hot paths.

Known limits and intentional boundaries:
-Seed compiler diagnostic parity is not claimed; Rust bootstrap remains diagnostic authority.
-M4 is only abortive Error[Whole]; no effect rows, inference, resumption, cleanup handlers, cancellation, or resource/effect composition.
-Resources cannot cross weave results or host/forge ABI boundaries.
-No structured concurrency, compile-time evaluator, generic shapes, SoA lowering, C/FFI, or native/LLVM backend.
-Records remain immutable, primitive-field-only, and non-recursive.
-Structural editing is not arbitrary AST mutation or universal syntax-error-proof AI generation.

These are intentional safety and proof boundaries, not undocumented debt.
