This is Tara Hartnett, a judge in the Melbourne Magistrates Court. In 2021, she ruled that women in Australia must absorb the risk of violent "cultural" misunderstandings when she sentenced Muhammad Bilal Khan, a 40-year-old Pakistani migrant, to community service for a campaign of predatory sexual assaults against young women.

The magistrate attributed Khan's actions to his background in Pakistan, suggesting his time at university was "devoid of female contact" which left him with a "limited understanding" of women and an inability to manage his "intense arousal."

What exactly did the attacker do? The court heard evidence of four separate, brazen assaults on women in public places, which reveal a pattern of calculated degradation. On one occasion, at the St Kilda Festival, he stalked a woman through the crowds, pressed his erect penis against her back, and ejaculated on her clothing. He fled immediately, leaving the victim to discover what happened only when she felt a sticky, wet substance soaking through her pants. At the Brunswick Music Festival, he repeated the same violation, targeting a woman in the crowd, grinding against her from behind, and ejaculating on her before vanishing, leaving her to grapple with the assault amidst a public celebration. On another occasion, on a crowded tram, he stood behind a teenage girl, unzipped his pants, and masturbated against her hip. The act was so brazen other passengers noticed. The victim felt the movement and pressure, and upon feeling the wetness, screamed in horror. Khan was captured on CCTV smirking as he fled, leaving his semen soaking through her jeans. In a further instance, inside the Carlton Club, he approached a woman and groped her buttocks and thighs, not once, but three times in quick, brazen succession, with all three violations captured on security cameras. All four women testified against the attacker in court.

Prosecutors wanted prison. But Judge Hartnett saw things differently. According to her, the Pakistani man was the victim and needed treatment, not jail. She then sent him to community service, therapy, zero jail time and called it a day.

This is Australia now.

The judgment is a formal surrender of women's rights. It sanctifies "cultural background" as a licence to grope, stalk, and ejaculate on strangers. It commands women to absorb the violent, sexual dysfunction of migrants as their civic duty, reducing them to objects whose trauma is a small price to pay to avoid the stain of bigotry. Their bodies are now the designated sacrifice on the altar of multicultural sensitivity.
