This thread is a perfect example of why grammar matters. Three people, one sentence, and three different interpretations. 🤯Unfortunately the original post is written in a way that invites confusion. The grammatical problem is that the sentence has multiple possible antecedents for “he.”

A reader can interpret it two ways:

Interpretation #1 (what I read)

Henry was wounded by a hostile foreigner.
Henry was then held down and arrested by police.
Henry was accused of racism by his murderer.

In this reading, “hostile foreigner” refers to the attacker.

Interpretation #2 (what Lance read)

Henry was wounded.
The murderer was accused of racism.
Therefore Lance focused on whether the murderer was actually foreign or British-born.

A cleaner version would have been:
“Henry Nowak was mortally wounded by a man who attacked him. While bleeding, Henry was restrained and arrested by police after the attacker accused him of racism.”
