The investigation was later halted by the Office of the Deputy Attorney General before prosecutors sought criminal charges. Officials familiar with the matter told ProPublica the case was closed during Todd Blanche’s tenure leading the office.

A spokesperson for the Justice Department said the matter did not align with the administration’s enforcement priorities and was better addressed through the civil process rather than criminal prosecution. The department also said it found no basis to continue pursuing criminal charges.
