Thanks for the kind words John! Huge accolade from you!
If anyone wants a cool podcast to get into, give #WWCOG a shot. They address a lot of false narratives within the gaming industry and interview devs like @N_X_G, @MichaelMumbauer, @mikegarndesign, @DNF2001RP and @RipoutGame to name a few. https://t.co/EJWkdgile5
Yep. If i had to choose between an eccentric af zealout; or a soulless af chameleon and parrot... id go with the zealout. At least he actually cares about something.😂
@Dungeon00X@KevinJulynG Isnt an actual article too long for you tho? I mean... you claim Nibs small article sized tweets are too long for you to read ☠️
The CEO of MSFT and the CEO of Xbox tell you that the business is not sustainable, needs to be monetized, and the decay needs to stop.
"You pay, we play" - Xbox fanboys.
The media? Lol.
Asha Sharma and Matt Booty released a blog post just days after their Showcase detailing things like Xbox being down $500m in revenue, 8+ months of Game Pass decline, massively lower margins, a worse hardware position than competitors, up to 5x higher upcoming component prices, changes some fans will find "frustrating" etc.
Asha Sharma also did an interview in which she stated the business wasn't "particularly healthy" and that "as the business is healthy, we will look to try and do more" exclusives.
In that same timeframe Matt Ball also did an interview in which he mentioned the use of ad integration to make things more affordable.
Again, all of this just days after the Xbox Showcase.
And you want to blame....media? Lol.
The blame is on #Xbox. They could've waited to put this stuff out, instead they decided to to it days after their Showcase and cloud themselves in negativity.
And if restructuring, layoffs etc are being planned in the background adjacent to this publicly revealed "reset", it's not surprising it might get picked up on.
Clearly there's a lot going on in both the foreground and background at Xbox, and a lot of it is erring on the negative.

What doesnt make sense is thinking two handpicked exclusive titles boons the platform with the primary benefit of actually having exclusive games - unique value proposition. Wtf is two games? Why would a person see gears on Xbox and PC, and yet still see Fable, Forza and Halo on PS and think Xbox is essential?
They lost their damn minds. Wanna experiment? Go all in on exclusivity. Not this half a toe dipped nonsense.
But go figure. They never fully committed to gamepass, never made it essential, and have basically been using money as fire fuel instead logs. Gears is just a martyr at this point for a half committal promise that only makes them look more inept. Why Gears and not Halo , Forza and Fable?
And if expensive termination fees is where the line is drawn, THEN WHY GEARS? WHY DO IT?
They have no clear direction, no impetus, and no clue.
This is xbox.
As I said in a podcast yesterday, the two games they picked as guinea pig tests for how viable exclusivity still is on #Xbox, make perfect sense.
1 AAA tentpole IP staple (Gears)
1 AAA attractive new IP (Clockwork)
Tests whether both a flagship IP and big new IP can sell well.
@StumpyKnox@nib95_ First it was "bollocks", now its "i cant see it happening for at least a year" 🤣🤣🤣
At least you have clarified your position to be far more in line with mine. All that just to end up stating the obvious ☠️
“Concord”
“Game Pass is sustainable”
“they’re owned by the richest company in the world”
“exclusives don’t matter”
“revenue is up”
“margins don’t matter”
“Asha will fix it”
meanwhile:
@nib95_ I have said it countless times. Don matrick only damaged the xbox one launch… they could have easily recovered from it had they put out good games… phil spencer is the one who killed xbox, the only thing good he ever did was bc. Every single decision he made ruined xbox.
Turns out concerns on #Xbox business model sustainability had validity, contrary to fanboy challenges and PR, as Satya Nadella himself admits:
"We've invested a lot. No one can accuse Microsoft of not having invested for the last 25 years.
And now we have to turn this into a sustainable business, that delivers what is fundamentally one of the best sources of entertainment.
The challenge we have is, we've not been monetizing that entertainment. In fact, if anything we've been subsidizing that entertainment.
In-fact there's more monetisation of Xbox games happening on YouTube than at Microsoft."
So Satya confirms they've been subsidising things, that they have to turn it into a sustainable business, and that he believes they need far greater monetisation.
Asha Sharma admitted a few days ago that Xbox's accountability margin is just 3% now, but keep in mind that does not include hardware losses and other costs, so in reality the actual operating income is either lower, or Xbox is operating at a LOSS.
So we can say with confidence now, the strategies Xbox pushed over the last decade or more, that countless fanboys glazed, ultimately failed and were not enough to compensate for a lack of more compelling exclusives relative to the competition.
Everything from Kinect, entertainment focus, PC day and date and play anywhere, Game Pass, XCloud, exclusivity de-emphasing, specific acquisitions, console split SKU etc.
One major thing the "Game Pass is profitable" crowd consistently failed to understand, is that the true cost of GP wasn't just the licensing costs for games on the service, or even development costs as well, instead it was always the immense sales cannibalisation it causes too, which directly offsets revenue gained.
That's why Call of Duty had to be removed, because the massive cannibalisation of its traditional sales was not offset by subscription revenue growth, hence a net negative.
It's also why despite releasing games on PC day and date AND making ~$5bn per annum on Game Pass, over the course of the first 4 years of the new gen, Xbox revenue growth was STILL near flat sans ABK, while competitors saw huge revenue growth in the same timeframe with more traditional business models.
Deduct Zenimax revenue, and Xbox likely saw revenue DECLINE.
FY2021 - $15.37bn
FY2022 - $16.23bn
FY2023 - $15.47bn
Y2024 - $15.75bn
And now Asha has admitted they've seen a further ~$500m revenue decline with ABK included.
It's a similar thing with "Game Pass helps game sales" PR. That was only ever true when GP was in its infancy.
As I'd always said, it would inevitably lead to greater cannibalisation of sales the more popular the service got, and that's exactly what happened and what MS themselves admitted.
In any case, as a general rule I think Xbox and PC/Xbox fans should just stop debating others with a much keener grasp of the industry, data and business, on matters of gaming business strategy.
Because no fandom has a worse track record. Y'all have continually misread and been wrong on practically everything on matters related to business strategy (esp console side), many for the better part of a decade or more.
All because your views are guided by platform preference tribalism and PR, not astute analysis, data, facts, financials or critical thinking.
@StumpyKnox@nib95_ So... what is your contention? Because it sounds like you can see it potentially being spun off... like we said? But before you said you think theyre committed long term to the console... so a little confused here 🤔
This is an example of @dark1x saying something logical, but the triggered audience participants reacts with the coherency of drunk amoebas.
The context here is only 2 games are exclusive here, with the one flagship title having a history of underperforming on PC and Xbox.
John isnt criticising the console or the game. He is saying this decision wont "move the needle".
What is required is ALL games need to be made exclusive to actually "move the needle" and get people to buy an xbox. The alternative is go full third party publisher and shy away from hardware (which no one wants). But this "one game here and one game there" approach to exclusivity is making neither the xbox console essential, nor the sales potential of one of xbox's most important IPs close to hopeful.
They are quite literally setting the game up to fail. Lets hope this game sells well on PC cus it sure as hell wont on xbox .
If you ever wondered if @digitalfoundry are idiots or not. This video should help you land firmly on Yes.
When should they go back John?
After their console is dead?
Anyone remotely involved in that community knows they have been bleeding hardcore support. They chose retention
@Shoryuken5170@TheRedDragon@asha_shar If you think PC game sales of God Of War, Horizon Zero Dawn and FW, Uncharted and TLOU are higher than the console sales, you are off your absolute rocker mate.
Hey @asha_shar when you announce studio closures and fire all those devs whom you gave a new Xbox email to for clout….
Can you use this chart and explain how you came to your decision to put them in danger by pulling a large revenue stream while crying about revenue streams???
