No, they should not be deported if they have a green card and are working toward citizenship.
But if they are not making an honest effort to become a US citizen then deport them regardless of how long they have been in the country, who they are married to, how many kids they have, what kind of job they have or how much/many taxes they have paid. They are gone if they can't do what is required by law to become a citizen. Hold a green card for 5 years, keep your nose clean and apply for citizenship. It's not hard.
