My paper on Sawt al-Bahrain (1950-1954), a short-lived literary magazine, was recently published in @SENJournal. I explore how this magazine influenced the Bahraini intelligentsia’s ideas on modernity and belonging to the Arab world. (DM for access) https://t.co/nKl1cVCt0z

🚨33.3 - Special Issue OUT🚨
Despite the ongoing genocidal campaign unleashed by Israel on Gaza and now Lebanon, we continue to witness a major wave of universities-led censorship, tenure denial, and students' disciplining related to 🇵🇸 across Western educational universities. In such a context, Middle East Critique is proud to present our third and most timely issue 33.3 of 2024:
𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐀𝐜𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐜 𝐐𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐏𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐞
(guest editors @walqaisiya & @PeruginiNic)
The theme could not be more significant, and the list of contributions--combining research articles and essasy (almost all in Open Access (OA))--are so enlightening.

Wrote a paper with @WafaAlsayed for @MidEastCritique about a drastically different time in the Gulf’s history:

The Gulf states have increasingly avoided relying on Washington’s deterrence alone. Instead, they developed a strategy built on three interlocking elements: cultivating deeper security guarantees from the United States; pursuing de-escalation with Iran; and, for some states, engaging Israel.

4/4 In 1970 and as Bahrain was preparing for independence, Iranian claims were put to rest following a UN survey that once again confirmed that Bahrainis do not see themselves as part of Iran. So these statements are ploys by politicians benefiting from regional conflict.
1/4 It’s important not to give this statement unnecessary importance. Iranian parliamentarians have been doing this since the 1950s. Bahrainis across the board have always rejected these claims.
