N.M. Rashid was a trailblazing Urdu poet who departed from traditional forms to lay the foundation for modern free verse with a deeply intellectual, universal vision centered around the concept of "Adam-e-Nau." Born in 1910 in Gujranwala, his early passion for poetry was nurtured by his family and enriched by broad exposure to classical Persian, Urdu, and English literature. Throughout his academic years, he actively edited literary journals, authored critical essays, and began publishing groundbreaking poems like "Ittifaqat." His professional career spanned roles in All India Radio, military public relations during World War II across the Middle East, Radio Pakistan, and eventually the United Nations. Alongside his career, he authored four major poetry collectionsβincluding Maa-varaa and Iran Mein Ajnabiβas well as a comprehensive study on modern Persian poetry. Known for his personal hobbies like horse riding, chess, and wrestling, he later passed away from a heart attack in 1975 in England, sparking controversy when his body was cremated according to his alleged wishes. Unlike his more accessible contemporaries, Rashidβs complex synthesis of thought and emotion demands deep intellectual engagement, cementing his legacy as an uncompromising, high-minded figure in modern Urdu literature.

On the night of August 8th, a 31-year-old female doctor diligently completed her duty, as she had done countless times before. After finishing her shift, she shared a quiet meal with her juniors at 2 AM. Exhausted from the long hours, she sought a moment of rest. With no designated room provided for doctors, she settled down to sleep in the seminar room, a makeshift refuge for those who work tirelessly through the night. Little did she know, this would be the last time she closed her eyes with a sense of routine comfort.
