The SR-71 Blackbird, F-117 Nighthawk, and F-35 Lightning II are all advanced American aircraft developed by Lockheed's Skunk Works, but they have distinct roles, designs, and eras. The SR-71 is a retired, high-speed, high-altitude reconnaissance plane known for its performance. The F-117 was the first operational stealth aircraft, a ground-attack plane designed for stealth using flat, angled surfaces. The F-35 is a current-generation, multi-role stealth fighter that utilizes more advanced stealth technology and computing power for both stealth and maneuverability.

A portion of the fleet is kept in airworthy condition to serve as a unique testbed for developing new stealth technologies, radar systems, and countermeasures, as well as for use in aggressor training to simulate potential adversaries.

The U.S. Air Force has confirmed these continued operations, with plans to keep some F-117s flying until at least FY2034
