Nigeria’s labour movement and civil society community were thrown into mourning on Sunday following the death of Comrade Abiodun Aremu, a veteran labour activist and Secretary of the Joint Action Front (JAF).

Aremu reportedly died in a suspected hit-and-run accident near his residence in Ota, Ogun State on Sunday evening. According to social critic and rights activist Debo Adeniran, who confirmed the incident in a Facebook post, the late activist was returning home when he was struck by a vehicle.

He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors confirmed him dead.

Aremu, a Marxist organiser and socialist thinker, was widely respected for his decades-long commitment to social justice, workers’ rights, and national liberation. As Secretary of JAF, a coalition of pro-labour civil society organisations, he played a pivotal role in mobilising mass resistance against anti-people policies and fuel price hikes.

He was also a leading figure in the Amílcar Cabral Ideological School Movement (ACIS-M), which promotes ideological training among activists and youth.
