US Strategy to Tilt Lebanon’s Power Balance

The US has devised a strategy to ensure the election of Army Commander Joseph Aoun as Lebanon's president, with a sole focus on his candidacy. Concurrently, “Israel” has been given the green light to intensify military operations aimed at weakening Hezbollah by targeting its support base through strikes, displacement, and blockades. Washington is also ramping up pressure on Lebanese political factions to support its preferred outcome.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is actively shaping Lebanon’s political future. In discussions with French President Emmanuel Macron, he urged France to leverage Israeli military operations to curb Hezbollah’s influence within Lebanon’s political institutions. Diplomatic sources told al-Akhbar that Netanyahu encouraged Macron to seize this opportunity to advance a political settlement endorsed by both France and the US, effectively reducing Hezbollah's power across all levels of governance.

The US has warned that failure to comply with this plan could lead to increased instability. In this context, the American Task Force for Lebanon echoed this sentiment, indicating that the death of Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah could be an opportunity to restore Lebanon’s sovereignty. The task force stressed the urgency of electing a president and called for a ceasefire to enable the Lebanese Army to deploy across the country, with renewed negotiations under US mediation aimed at establishing a reform-driven government.

In a meeting with Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati, the task force probed his stance on electing a president and discussed sensitive topics like Hezbollah’s role and the situation of displaced civilians. There are growing concerns that the proposed solution resembles the May 17 Agreement of 1983, which was widely criticized for undermining Lebanon’s sovereignty and exacerbating sectarian tensions. The goal appears to be the marginalization of Hezbollah’s influence and the reshaping of Lebanon's power-sharing structure, particularly concerning the representation of the Shiite community.

Internally, US-aligned groups are strongly advocating for Joseph Aoun’s presidency, arguing that Hezbollah is too weakened to obstruct his candidacy. These groups are also working to discredit other potential candidates, portraying them as weak or relics of past eras. Meanwhile, Speaker Nabih Berri has reportedly denied supporting Aoun, emphasizing that halting the war is the priority before focusing on a consensus presidential candidate.
