Since 1996, a coach helped 127 baseball players get selected in the MLB draft.
I asked him what he looks for in players.
Turns out—most of it has nothing to do with hitting, pitching, or fielding.
7 powerful lessons he taught me about leadership, coaching, & success 👇
***
For context, Elliott Avent is head baseball coach at NC State.
He's one of the best coaches of all-time.
• 1,200+ career wins
• 127 players drafted
• 38 All-Americans
• 2003 National Coach of Year
And he just led NC State to the College World Series (again).
Now, the lessons 👇
***
Everybody makes mistakes & loses games
But Avent says “3 losses in a row disrupt a team more than you know"
Apply this to anything:
• Diets
• Routines
• Workouts
• Personal goals
• Professional goals
• Company performance
Take your losses/misses in stride—but don't let them snowball
***
Keep the band together
Avent is in the same job for 28+ years.
His staff is long-tenured too...
“Continuity & consistency are the best ingredients to keep things going,” Avent says
***
Don’t make promises you can’t keep
“It's easy to promise ripe watermelons in December—because you don’t need to deliver them until July"
That's what Avent's dad used to say...
So, Avent tells his players the truth—even if it's not what they want to hear
***
The grass isn't always greener
Over the years, Avent has received lots of attractive (& rewarding!) job offers.
But, he loves NC State—& has stayed 28+ yrs...
When you love where you're at, resist the urge to chase shiny objects elsewhere
***
Great leaders empower others
Avent believes in his staff...
And delegates significant responsibility to them
In turn, it builds trust & loyalty
Don’t just tell people you believe in them—show them
***
Every detail matters
I asked Avent what he looks for recruiting.
Turns out—it's not just hitting, fielding, & pitching.
• Who shows up early?
• Who leaves last?
• Who cleans up?
• Who smiles?
It’s the “little things that make champions,” he says
***
Don’t budge on core values
Avent is adaptable, flexible, & evolves with the times.
Yet, some things don't change.
His players need:
• Passion
• Work ethic
• High character
Great leaders never lose sight of what matters most
