Everybody makes mistakes & loses games

But Avent says “3 losses in a row disrupt a team more than you know"

Apply this to anything:

• Diets
• Routines
• Workouts
• Personal goals
• Professional goals
• Company performance

Take your losses/misses in stride—but don't let them snowball

Keep the band together

Avent is in the same job for 28+ years.

His staff is long-tenured too...

“Continuity & consistency are the best ingredients to keep things going,” Avent says

Don’t make promises you can’t keep

“It's easy to promise ripe watermelons in December—because you don’t need to deliver them until July"

Over the years, Avent has received lots of attractive (& rewarding!) job offers.

But, he loves NC State—& has stayed 28+ yrs...

When you love where you're at, resist the urge to chase shiny objects elsewhere

I asked Avent what he looks for recruiting.

Turns out—it's not just hitting, fielding, & pitching.

• Who shows up early?

• Who cleans up?
• Who smiles?

It’s the “little things that make champions,” he says

Avent is adaptable, flexible, & evolves with the times.

Yet, some things don't change.
