Most Indians are honest citizens.

They are willing to pay taxes and do not object to contributing to nation-building.

The government is working aggressively to widen the tax net and plug loopholes to catch evaders — which is fair and necessary.

But an equally important question remains unanswered: Where is the accountability for how hard-earned public money is used?

Taxpayers see funds being spent for political convenience and election gains, while core issues remain unresolved — corruption, potholes and poor roads, rising accidents, pollution, unemployment, and failing urban infrastructure.

Collecting taxes is only one part of governance. Using them honestly, efficiently, and transparently is the real test.

A responsible government must remember:
Taxes are not donations; they are trust.
