After breaking off an unhealthy soul tie with her job, a woman from our congregation not only got delivered of a spirit of fear that had been tormenting her for years, but she automatically lost her addiction for food and lost 70 pounds! The truth the Holy Spirit revealed to her about her true identity in Christ so transformed her, it changed the way she looked at food. The weight issue she struggled with for years suddenly changed when she recognized the lies she believed and allowed the Lord to set her free.
I interviewed Tommi-Leigh this past Sunday (at Crossroads) as a part of our 4-part series of Freedom and I did a longer interview with her this week on my YouTube channel. Her testimony is powerful and if you have any addictions, strongholds, or wonder how soul ties work - her story will give you practical tools and insights for freedom.

The Prophetic Dream Behind a Child Trafficking Thriller
In my recent interview with filmmaker, Ben Pauling, I heard the incredible back story to a child trafficking thriller currently in production. He shares how God got his attention through a powerful prophetic dream that led him on a journey exposing the dark realities of underground exploitation rings. He talks about divine appointments, supernatural direction, and miraculous provision, and how God prepared him for this assignment. You’ll love his heart, his humility, and his inspiring testimony.

RIGHTLY RESPOND TO REBUKE – OR BECOME A FOOL
“A rebuke goes deeper into a man of understanding than a hundred blows into a fool” (Proverbs 17:10 ESV).
No one likes to be corrected. And even more challenging is to be directly rebuked by a fellow believer. My guess is that the majority of us would consider a rebuke of any kind to be “unkind” – and even unscriptural. But God’s Word does give room for godly rebukes. There are appropriate parameters, for sure, but it’s there. But what’s more important is not the rebuke itself. It’s our response. Regardless of the delivery or tone, if the rebuke given is justified, our responsibility is to heed the instruction and learn the lesson.
And based on a recent dream, it’s apparent that leaders need to set the standard in how to respond to such rebukes…
The dream I had was uncomfortable. Probably because my own actions in the dream were a bit surprising, and even unsettling. In the dream, I witnessed some leaders caught in deception. I knew they had been doing this for a while and were intentionally misleading people. I couldn’t believe how brazen they were in saying one thing and doing another, knowing the impact it was having. I then saw myself go behind the scenes to confront them directly and started rebuking them on the spot. I was speaking with a boldness that wasn’t my own, and had no hesitation because I had seen the evidence firsthand and was filled with righteous indignation. I spoke clearly concerning the charge against them and their duplicity, calling for them to repent.
Then as I walked away from the scene I followed the woman responsible (I knew she was headed to a public area). I was telling her, “I can’t believe you’re doing this! How can you live with yourself? You’ll have to answer for this!” Again, I was surprised at my direct confrontation, but there was no doubt in my heart concerning the truth of this charge. It was one final warning for her to consider the severe consequences of this blatant sin. But when she turned around, I was shocked at her response. Instead of giving any kind of rebuttal or trying to change my mind, she simply looked at me in disdain with a mocking smile on her face. She knew what she had done and wasn’t about to back down. She actually seemed proud of it. My rebukes did nothing but embolden her. I was taken aback by her outright defiance and pride.
Then the scene changed and I saw a leader standing on a platform with other leaders. But this one stood out. This leader had given himself to deception for so long, his appearance had actually changed. After consistently using his position to manipulate facts and deny the truth, his entire face had turned bright yellow and he was wearing a clown suit. With a dunce cap on his head, he looked like a literal fool. In the dream, I simply knew that this appearance was the result of consistent rebellion and refusal to acknowledge wrong-doing. His cowardice had now become his covering.
“Doing wrong is like a joke to a fool, but wisdom is pleasure to a man of understanding” (Proverbs 10:23).
My first reaction upon waking was wondering how I could be so bold to directly rebuke these leaders. In real life, I have usually been one to appeal to others “with gentleness” as Scripture dictates (2 Timothy 2:25). But in the dream, I had no hesitation. I simply knew that I had full authorization to make the claims I did and was pleading with these leaders to stop the damage being done. And though I initially confronted them privately, I knew it was about to go public.
“Those whom I love, I reprove and discipline, so be zealous and repent” (Revelation 3:19).
Though this kind of rebuke (reproof) is certainly not the norm for most believers, God clearly tells us that there are times it is needed for the sake of the Body. When someone consistently ignores His warnings and deliberately refuses to acknowledge wrongdoing, He will send someone with a rebuke. Nathan rebuked David (2 Samuel 12:1-14), Samuel rebuked Saul ( 1 Samuel 13:13-14; 15:10-35), Jesus rebuked Peter (Matthew 16:21-23), Paul rebuked Peter (Galatians 2:11-14), and Peter rebuked Ananias and Sapphira (Acts 5:1-11).
In all these cases, there was clear disobedience to God’s Word and a violation against God’s people. And these were not indirect suggestions, but direct rebukes that carried strong language and heavy consequences. And in each case, it was the response of the one being charged that ultimately determined the outcome.
I believe the message in this dream is not just about the necessity for godly rebukes, but the weight of one’s response. Regardless of the tone, the method of delivery, or even whether a rebuke is 100% accurate, if there is any truth to it, one who walks in the fear of the Lord will pay attention and receive whatever instruction is there.
“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction” (Proverbs 1:7).
Our default mode will be to point to the rebuke itself as the problem and totally miss the opportunity for growth. God has already promised that He will vindicate the innocent (Micah 7:8-9). The humble of heart will rightly weigh any charge and receive whatever correction is valid, leaving the rest to the Lord.
One other thing to note is the woman I followed. I immediately sensed in the dream that she was “responsible.” I believe she represents the demonic spirits behind these sins of the flesh (2 Kings 9:22, Prov 5:3-6, Rev 19:2). She was pride, deception, manipulation, and control – all wrapped into one. And seeing “her” simply underscored the spiritual battle taking place. Those who give into their flesh, sin repeatedly, and consistently ignore the Lord’s warnings WILL open doors to demonic influences that only fuel their rebellion.
I believe this dream was given to confirm the place of godly rebuke, pay attention to our response, and pray that the lies of the enemy will be exposed and the light of God’s truth would dispel the darkness of deception. Godly rebuke is not meant to shame, but to shape, and the wise will receive it. So, regardless of the one bringing a rebuke, or the tone in which it is given – if there is any truth to be gleaned, wisdom will respond rightly and heed the instruction. Before it’s too late, and turn into a fool.
In a dream last night, I saw the body of Christ as a huge orchestra. Dressed in concert attire and seated on two sides of a massive room, many were positioned to take part. Not all had instruments ready, but they were poised and waiting for their cue. But there was no primary leader. Not even a podium or stage. They were all simply dressed, seated in place, and ready to make music.
I saw that numerous ones were holding violins, positioned and ready, waiting for the cue. I had mine, as well, and wondered if I should start playing to lead the way. And yet, I didn’t feel prompted to. I wasn’t even sure I was fully prepared to do so. But then as I was pondering what to do next, I heard someone else start to play. A simple melody, but pure and clear. Others started following. One by one. Single lines of melodies coming together to form a oneness of sound. Without any direction, the music had begun. Spontaneously from the heart. The sound started to grow and I was struck by this unexpected harmony of voices that seemed to come from another realm.
Upon waking, I had two lingering impressions. One was that there was no leader. No stage or podium was present. Evidently, it wasn’t central to the cause. The music they were to make would emanate from within, not directed from a stage. The second is that they were on two sides of the room. A distinct aisle down the middle separated them, but I didn’t know why. They all wore the same attire for the same purpose. Thankfully in the end, it didn’t prevent them from sounding as one.
"For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and all were made to drink of one Spirit." (1 Corinthians 12:13)
If this is a picture of the church right now, here are some thoughts: The oneness of sound came from unity of the Spirit - not directed by a leader on stage. Perhaps we should not be so fixated on those we follow or who we take our cues from. Our unity is of the Spirit and not of man. The messages we carry should never be dependent on those with platforms and podiums, but on the unchanging standard of God’s Word (all orchestras tune to a standard pitch that never changes).
Secondly, the divisions we create must never be at the cost of our greater call and assignment. We must keep our hearts fixed on that which is eternal and central to our commission as believers. Even as we test and weigh who we follow and what we believe, let’s never forget our greater cause and that which should actually unify us.
Most importantly, we each have a part to play. A voice to use. A sound to carry. It doesn’t matter where you are positioned or seated in the whole. When you release a sound from the Spirit, it will carry weight and become a ripple effect throughout the whole. And it is this kind of unity and oneness of Spirit that will have the influence and impact to change hearts and even destinies for those who listen.
"But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship Him." (John 4:23 ESV)
Yesterday morning, I spoke to our home congregation about SOUL TIES. This was Part 1 of a 4-part series on Freedom in Christ.
Through all our years of ministry and helping people get delivered and set free, unhealthy soul ties is probably one of the biggest roadblocks and strongholds that people face. Secular psychology often labels it as codependency, but there are numerous biblical references to this soulish trap because it leads to moral compromise and even idolatry. When our emotional tanks are empty and our affections are misaligned, our hearts get entangled with the wrong people at the wrong time. We can even have unhealthy soul ties to ministries, jobs, and homes. Whenever our hearts get out of order with God's design, we place ourselves at risk of enemy infiltration and bondage.
I made this teaching extremely practical and personal. I guarantee this is something that every believer is faced with at some point in their journey. And getting free will not only help you, but those around you.

Can we recognize the Spirit of Truth - regardless of the packaging?
In recent weeks I have researched several matters out for prayer and direction given some hot button issues being debated online. I have found numerous resources helpful in my studies that I’ve considered sharing, but have found myself reluctant to name the sources. Why? Because in this volatile social media environment, to name any minister or ministry as a potential source of information is extremely risky. No matter who I might name there will be immediate pushback because of something in their life or ministry that is deemed questionable or controversial. Whether it’s a theological stance, a ministry practice, or a persona they present, more than likely someone will call me out for my own lack of integrity in even considering such a source.
Though differences of opinion and perspective have always been a part of our collective journey, the online reaction and pointing of fingers has increased exponentially in recent months. One cannot share a link to something without someone in the comments standing up and declaring, “heresy!” And though I certainly hope that I would personally never commend someone that turned out to be a heretic, I have learned that I can agree with another leader on one aspect of their belief system while disagreeing on another - without throwing them under the bus.
We’re never going to fully agree on who we follow, like, or learn from. And I’ve actually learned some valuable lessons from other leaders that I will likely never “follow” because of their particular teaching focus or ministry style. But it doesn’t mean they can’t carry some truth. I am not afraid of being deceived or led astray because I’m constantly grounding myself in the Word, purposing to recognize and acknowledge the Spirit of Truth when I see Him. Whether that Truth comes from the messenger, the entire message, or just one insight or revelation shared, I have determined to be so familiar with the Spirit of Truth in my daily walk, I will recognize Him no matter how He’s packaged. If I’ve done my homework, I can be fully convinced in my own mind (Romans 14:5).
Though we should always aim to follow those who follow Christ with the utmost integrity in both content and character, there will always be leaders among us who just aren’t there yet. It doesn’t mean they are dangerous or deceptive. Not every belief or practice carries the same weight. Some things are simply “disputable matters” requiring further study and prayer (Romans 14).
The Spirit of Truth can sometimes show up in the most unlikely places. I think He does this to test us. The Word instructs us to exercise our “powers of discernment,” training them through constant practice so that we can, both personally and corporately, rightly distinguish good from evil (Hebrews 5:14). Calling out false leaders and heretical teachings is only a first step in maturing our faith. The more critical lesson is to rightly discern what is true. Regardless of the packaging.
“And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him. You know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you” (John 14:16-17 ESV).
Religious Spirits Hate the PERSON of Holy Spirit
There are Religious Spirits still alive and well in the Church that are doing everything possible to shut down our relationship with the Third Person of the Trinity. And for those who feel a longing in their spirit for deeper fellowship with the Lord, it is only through the Holy Spirit that relationship with Christ can happen. And this isn’t about seeking gifts or manifestations.
The Holy Spirit is a Person. Not an “it,” a manifestation, a gift giver, or a power source. He is fully God - equal with the Father and the Son. And the Holy Spirit longs for fellowship with us in the same measure. We have been instructed to walk by the Spirit (Gal 5:16), be led by the Spirit (Rom 8:14), and set our minds on things of the Spirit (Rom 8:5-6). We are not just called to believe in Him, but to walk with Him. And this is what religious spirits hate. They don’t want us to develop a relationship with the Person of Holy Spirit because in our pursuit of this fellowship, Holy Spirit will expose THEM.
In John 14, Jesus said He was sending the Holy Spirit as a “Helper,” but that doesn’t mean Lesser. Jesus made it clear that His departure was not the end of divine communication but the beginning of a deeper one. Thus, our walk with Holy Spirit must be ongoing, ever deepening in fellowship and intimacy.
“I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. When the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all the truth, for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak, and He will declare to you the things that are to come.” (John 16:12-13 ESV).
We have been encouraged to pursue spiritual gifts (1 Cor 14:1), but that is not the same as pursuing fellowship with the Holy Spirit (2 Cor 13:14). We are not to seek out the supernatural realm or spiritual experiences for those things are merely the evidence and fruits of the Spirit at work. This is actually where we fall into error if we begin to replace a relationship with Holy Spirit with a pursuit of the supernatural. In so doing, we are no better than a religious spirit that only seeks the works of God instead of relationship with God (Gal 2:16).
“The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all” (2 Cor 13:14).
Holy Spirit longs for us to know Him...Holy Spirit is not an accessory to the Christian life. He is the One who makes it possible. He exposes what is false, reveals what is true, and leads us to the Father....And His presence is more than a biblical concept; it is tangible, powerful, and life altering for those who recognize Him and surrender to His work...
The cleansing and correction in the Body of Christ is making room for the true and authentic Person of HOLY Spirit that will far outshine every other counterfeit spirit that has sought to contort that which is pure, holy, and super natural. And we will recognize the HOLY Spirit as compared to “another spirit” (2 Cor 11:4) because He will not draw attention to Himself OR His works. His focus will not be on the outward workings of His presence, but on Jesus. All glory will go to the Father and to the Son. Holy Spirit seeks relationship with us so that we can know the heart of the Father and believe in the finished work of the Son...
Any religious spirit trying to discredit His purpose can be easily displaced by ongoing fellowship with the Spirit of God. He is a Person to be known and He longs to reveal Himself through those who earnestly seek Him.
This past Sunday, guest speaker Nigel Okkers, shared Isaiah 65:7 where it says “…the new wine is found in the cluster.” I was struck by this admonition for the next season of restoration in the Church. If we want to position ourselves for a fresh infilling, and even outpouring, of Holy Spirit, we cannot receive it in isolation. It is only through oneness of heart and close fellowship with one another that increase can come.
So the question may not be whether or not there’s “more” of the Holy Spirit to experience, but in asking where your cluster is. Who are you joined to, and who are you joined with? FIND YOUR CLUSTER and see what God will do through the collective.
"…so that your FAITH might not rest in the wisdom of men but in the POWER of God” (1 Corinthians 2:5b).
I have sensed a rising hesitancy to step out in faith regarding the things of the Spirit. Because of the ongoing scrutiny and exposure of false teachings and practices, there is a growing fear of being unfaithful to God’s Word. Some who believe in spiritual gifts and long for “more” of God, are pulling back and beginning to doubt those “impressions” they once received. Given the rising call for biblical accuracy and accountability, there are some who have begun to pull back from their pursuit of “spirituals” (1 Corinthians 14) for fear of being misled or deceived.
But as much as we must let the Word of God ground us, we cannot give in to a fear that kills the life of the Spirit. We must be scripturally accurate, but never at the expense of God’s power. And I'm not talking about leaders who compromise integrity for the sake of impact, but calling attention to the many believers who simply want to KNOW their God. And here’s the dividing mark that I’ve recently discovered. Throughout the biblical narrative, it’s FAITH that God responds to. Not theological precision.
Jesus didn’t reward or respond to those who were theologically perfect, but to those who walked by FAITH and dared to believe in Who He was. He recognized and championed those who were willing to step outside the norms of the day and the strict protocols of religion. He performed miracles when He saw that kind of faith (Matt 9:2, Luke 8:44). Throughout Scripture, God responds to spiritual hunger – those who are zealous for His presence and His power (Psalm 107:9).
It is possible to be grounded in the Word and yet hesitant - even resistant - to the very ways the Spirit moves. It is possible to be theologically accurate, but void of the Spirit’s life. Even spiritually dry. And as I have personally considered my own experiences and priorities in the light of recent exposures, I have determined that I would rather be criticized for my zealous faith than accepted for my theological prowess. I will always pursue integrity regarding spiritual matters and am willing to be corrected when wrong. But I never want to lose my passion for God that pursues things that can’t be fact-checked or verified by scholarly research.
Some of the major spiritual revivals of past decades are being criticized for false signs and wonders, and even totally disqualified because of some of the leaders involved. But I can personally testify to the power of God that was present, because I was there. And while it is true that some of the major leaders of past revivals are now known to be frauds and fakes, it is also true that the spiritual hunger and faith of the people who came was REAL. Regardless of who was on stage, the crowds of people who came to those past revivals were hungry for God. It wasn’t always because of the leader, but because God Himself was showing up. People came with expectancy, longing for encounter, believing that God would meet them. And it was that collective desire to touch God that drew heaven to respond. And many are still testifying to the positive impact those experiences had on their relationship with God.
For many who have “tasted and seen” the various outpourings of God’s Spirit in past years, it has not been mere emotionalism. Scripture distinguishes between empty enthusiasm and genuine faith. Because what God honors is not hype, but heart posture. He comes to those who are humble and contrite (Isaiah 66:2). He heals and restores those who earnestly seek Him (Jeremiah 29:13). He rushes to those who cry out to Him (Psalm 34:17). Yes, we must live up to the standards set forth in His Word. But they were never meant to limit or restrict our zeal for Him, as much as to undergird and protect us in the journey.
I serve a God beyond time and space. One who defies the natural order and is beyond comprehension or understanding. He calls us to believe for things that “…eye has not seen, ear has not heard, nor has the heart of man imagined” (Is 64:4). So I accept the fact that faith will always carry risk. It will always invite criticism. And it will usually look foolish to the doubting Thomas’ who need tangible proof. But faith is not proven by how well we analyze or dissect it, but by how we respond to His voice.
Jesus was not looking for doctrinal precision. He was looking for faith (Luke 18:8). And His challenge still remains. Even as we fine tune our doctrines and correct some false teachings, we must never lose our zeal for Him that is, at times, crazy, irrational, and unproven. Spiritual pursuit was never meant to be “safe.” It was meant to be fueled by an unwavering faith in a God who doesn’t always makes sense, but gives us life everlasting and joy unspeakable. IF we believe.
I agree that many of those associated with this movement are totally false and heretical. But there are likely frauds in most any denomination or movement because that's the nature of sinful men. Regardless, God's intentions haven't changed regarding the Person and work of His Spirit (and I know you and I would strongly disagree on what that looks like today:-).
POWER, PURITY, AND THE FUTURE OF THE CHARISMATIC MOVEMENT
There’s been a lot said lately about what’s gone wrong in the Charismatic movement. And unfortunately - some of it is true. But let’s remember why God initiated this movement to begin with.
Yes, we have seen the exposure of sin, the misuse of spiritual authority, and the elevation of gifting above character. We’ve watched influence grow faster than integrity, and platforms expand beyond accountability. We can’t ignore this and we must own it. But for those who may be discouraged, this is not just a time of reckoning. It’s a time of recalibration.
The Charismatic movement did not begin as a reactionary stream or a fringe expression of Christianity. It was, at its core, a restoration movement. It called the Church back to the reality that the Holy Spirit is not just a doctrine to affirm, but a Person to know. It reminded believers that the power of God was not reserved for history, but available for the present. It reawakened the truth that every believer - not just leaders - could hear His voice, be led by His Spirit, and participate in His work.
For many, this was life-changing. For the broader Body of Christ, it was meant to be strengthening. Where there had been form without power, the Charismatic movement reintroduced expectancy. Where there had been structure without participation, it reactivated the priesthood of all believers. Where there had been intellectual faith alone, it invited encounter. This was never meant to divide the Church. It was meant to supply what had been lacking.
So where did we go wrong?
We lost the bigger picture. In emphasizing the gifts, we often neglected the larger framework Scripture gives us. In 1 Corinthians 12, Paul does not begin with “gifts.” He begins with “spirituals” - a much broader category that includes not only what is given, but how it is stewarded and what it produces. He goes on to describe not just gifts, but also services and activities - revealing that the work of the Spirit is multi-dimensional and fully governed by God. But we reduced it. We focused on gifts more than maturity. Manifestation more than formation. Platform more than purity. And now - that imbalance is being exposed.
Scripture tells us that judgment begins in the house of God - not to destroy, but to purify. What’s being shaken isn’t the move of the Spirit. It’s not what God initiated that was flawed. It was what we built around it. It’s the structures, mindsets, and practices that could not sustain the weight of true spiritual authority.
If we are going to move forward, we must return to the fullness of what Scripture actually teaches about life in the Spirit. We must move beyond a gift-centered identity and recover a Spirit-governed life. This means understanding that gifts are given by grace, but must be stewarded in humility. Service requires submission, maturity, and accountability. Spiritual activity is ultimately measured by what God produces - not what we display.
It also means recognizing that spiritual power was never meant to operate apart from spiritual purity. The same Spirit who empowers also sanctifies. And any expression of the Spirit that bypasses the character of Christ must be questioned, no matter how compelling it appears.
To those within the Charismatic movement who feel disillusioned, grieved, or even embarrassed by what has been exposed - do not lose heart. God is not asking you to abandon what He has given. He is asking you to mature in it. The hunger for His presence, the desire to hear His voice, the expectation of His power - these are not the problem. These are treasures that must be preserved. What is being removed are the distortions that have attached themselves to those realities. This is a moment to rebuild on a stronger foundation. Not less of the Spirit - but more of His full work. Not less power - but power rightly aligned with purity. Not less expression - but expression governed by truth.
And to those outside Charismatic circles who have looked on with concern, skepticism, or even criticism - there is something important to understand. The failures you are seeing are not the fruit of the Holy Spirit. They are the result of misapplied truth and unguarded hearts.
But the core reality remains: God still speaks. God still heals. God still moves by His Spirit. And the Church needs this. The answer is not to reject what has been misused, but to rightly understand and restore it according to Scripture.
What’s ahead is a more mature Church. A people who understand not just the gifts - but the full work of the Spirit. A Church where power, purity, and accountability walk together. A generation that refuses to choose between truth and experience - and embraces both.
That He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, so that He might present the church to Himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish (Ephesians 5:26-27 ESV).

TEN INDICATORS OF TRUE REPENTANCE
When leaders in the Body of Christ are caught in sin, it is their response to the charges that will ultimately reveal the true state of their heart. Scripture describes those who are truly serious about making things right versus those who simply deflect their guilt and defend their own reputation.
1. TRUE REPENTANCE NAMES THE SIN TRUTHFULLY AND SPECIFICALLY. (Proverbs 28:13)
An honest heart will call the sin as God calls it: deceit, immorality, abuse of power, partiality, intimidation, exploitation, cover-up, or falsehood. There will be no hesitation in naming the sin as God does (Psalm 51; Ephesians 5:11–13). THE FALSE VERSION DOWNPLAYS THE OFFENSE. Saying “mistakes were made,” “boundaries were crossed,” or “I was in a season of weakness,” seeks to lessen the charge and minimize the sin. Reframing a repeated pattern of offense as a momentary lapse in judgment reveals a heart that is unwilling to admit fault and take ownership for the transgression. (1 John 1:8-9)
2. TRUE REPENTANCE FULLY EMBRACES CORRECTION AND ACCOUNTABILITY. (2 Corinthians 7:11)
An earnest heart will do whatever it takes to make things right in the sight of God and before others without trying to preserve a reputation or ministry. The priority is to reveal truth for everyone’s sake, not just defend one’s personal intentions. (1 Timothy 3:1-7) THE FALSE VERSION LABELS ACCUSATIONS AS SLANDER, DIVISION, PERSECUTION, OR A DEMONIC ATTACK. When the first response is to act more upset by the exposure than the sin itself, or to disqualify any charge as coming from a perceived enemy, it reveals an unwillingness to look at the evidence and weigh responsibly. (Proverbs 12:1; 15:31)
3. TRUE REPENTANCE IS QUICK TO HEAR, SLOW TO SPEAK, AND SLOW TO ANGER. (James 1:19-21)
A humble heart will listen without prejudice in order to clearly understand the charges being brought, free of anger or resentment. A pure heart seeks the truth more than vindication. (1 Peter 5:1-3) THE FALSE VERSION IS QUICK TO DEFEND AND JUSTIFY THROUGH EMOTIONAL APPEALS. Tears, references to brokenness, childhood wounds, pressure, or burnout, may all be real, but can still function as deflection if they replace clear and open confession. When the accused draws attention to their own pain and victimization, their personal ego and need for validation have become more important than the pains inflicted on those they have hurt. (Romans 12:17-21)
4. TRUE REPENTANCE PRIORITIZES THE HARMED, NOT THE MINISTER OR MINISTRY. (Psalms 82:3-4)
A true shepherd will acknowledge the specific sin committed and the specific pain suffered by an individual, showing care and compassion for those who have been harmed or mistreated. Forgiveness and appropriate restitution will be the priority, even at personal cost. (Isaiah 1:17) THE FALSE VERSION DEFERS THROUGH VAGUE APOLOGIES. Repeated claims of “I’m so sorry,” or declaring “I’m sorry if anyone was hurt” avoids admittance of guilt and diminishes the impact of specific sins inflicted on specific individuals. To generalize a wrongdoing without acknowledging the particular wrongs committed reveals an unwillingness to account for sins and seeks to bypass accountability. (Numbers 5:7, Matthew 5:23-24)
5. TRUE REPENTANCE RIGHTLY GRIEVES THE LOSS OF WITNESS FOR CHRIST. (1 Peter 2:12 NIV)
A godly heart will grieve over the loss of testimony and stain upon the Body of Christ. The pain inflicted on others and the reproach upon the Church will be just as painful as the personal cost of sin. (Titus 2:7-8) THE FALSE VERSION SHIFTS FOCUS TO THE MINISTRY’S RIGHTEOUS CAUSE AND GOOD FRUIT. When focus is quickly shifted to “all the good we’ve done” or the “greater mission” of the ministry, the severity of sin is sidestepped in an attempt to bolster the gifts or talents of the accused. This grasping for recognition exposes idolatry of ministry and the lack of godly sorrow. (Psalm 51:3-5)
6. TRUE REPENTANCE BRINGS EVERYTHING INTO THE LIGHT WITH TRANSPARENCY AND FULL DISCLOSURE. (Ephesians 5:11-14)
A repentant heart will not withhold details or seek to hide uncomfortable truths. There will be a readiness to give account for not only the charges being brought, but openly share about the process of accountability, including appropriate consequences, restitution, and all necessary actions being taken to address concerns and needed policy changes for the future. THE FALSE VERSION IS “HONEST” ONLY AFTER BEING CAUGHT WITH UNDENIABLE PROOF OF SIN. Those who feign remorse only after repeated exposure simply confirm their lack of personal conscience or conviction. When the fear of man is greater than the fear of the Lord, unrepentant hearts will spin the details to their own advantage in order to maintain control of a false narrative. (Proverbs 8:13)
7. TRUE REPENTANCE SPEAKS CONSISTENTLY WITHOUT SPRITUAL EMBELLISHMENT. (Matthew 5:37)
Someone who wants to walk in the light will tell the whole truth from the very beginning, without changing narratives or details. There will be no attempt to spiritualize their sin, but a readiness to confess their faults without excuse. THE FALSE VERSION WILL CHANGE THE DETAILS TO BENEFIT THE ACCUSED AND SHAME THE VICTIM. When storylines change and narratives continually shift, it demonstrates a manipulation of facts to benefit the one being charged. When words are twisted and details change, the one speaking only reveals their intent to confuse and control. (Acts 20:30)
8. TRUE REPENTANCE INVITES OUTSIDE INVESTIGATION AND OVERSIGHT. (Proverbs 27:6)
A minister of integrity will seek correction and counsel from outside his circle of friends and peers. Objective truth will be sought for the sake of the Church rather than limiting oversight to those influenced by ministry loyalties or partiality. (Hebrews 13:17) THE FALSE VERSION SEEKS A QUICK RESOLUTION IN HOPES OF “MOVING ON.” Avoidance of third-party investigations or input given by trained counselors or psychologists reveals a need to control a narrative. Any assumption that a leader’s sin is only “spiritual” (can be dealt with “in house”) and void of other potentially destructive (mental or psychological) causes is blind, presumptuous, and dangerous to the Body of Christ. (1 Timothy 5:21)
9. TRUE REPENTANCE COMMUNICATES CLEAR AND SPECIFIC CHANGES FOR THE FUTURE. (1 Corinthians 9:27)
Repentance is not merely confession; it is changing direction. The fruit of repentance is not behavior modification, but a change of heart and a commitment to long term transformation. This will be seen in strategic changes to ministry policies, as well as personal commitments to long term accountability. Trust and credibility must be reestablished through consistent godly practices over time. (James 2:24, 4:8) THE FALSE VERSION TREATS FORGIVENESS AS CANCELLATION OF CONSEQUENCES. Calling for forgiveness, mercy, and “love” in hopes of sidestepping the consequences exposes a leader unwilling to surrender their influence or platform. When being charged with spiritual malpractice or abuse, forgiveness is not the issue. Restitution and rebuilding trust are the first steps in true restoration. (Matthew 3:8)
10. TRUE REPENTANCE SURRENDERS TITLE, OFFICE, AND PLATFORM WHEN BIBLICALLY DISQUALIFIED. (Mark 10:45)
Leaders of integrity understand the sacred charge given to them and will yield any claim or right in maintaining their positions of influence when biblical standards have been violated. They will willingly lay down their ministry for the honor of Christ and step away from all public ministry with no expectation of returning. (Titus 1:5-9) THE FALSE VERSION SEEKS QUICK RESOTRATION AND RETURN TO MINISTRY. Selfish ambition and idolatry of ministry becomes apparent when compromised leaders refuse to step down or remove themselves from the spotlight. The more one grasps for the microphone or platform, the more entrenched they are in their own delusion of importance. When “the call” is touted as priority, character has been dismissed and they disqualify themselves from any position of true spiritual authority.
Last night I had a dream where I saw something encroaching upon my house as a warning. As I looked out the window it looked like a net of some kind that sought to encompass my entire home. It was brown and wooden. Hard and fixed. The net resembled honeycomb and seemed to have a life of its own. But it kept growing and getting bigger. Every time I looked, it had covered more territory and was about to engulf me. It seemed to come out of nowhere.
Just when I thought it would take over, I then looked and saw huge mounds of snow that had formed all around my house. They had been formed and fashioned like tall round buffers. One after another, the pillars of hardened snow formed a line in front of my house. And nothing could pass by them.
Upon waking, I went to Scripture for answers. Why was the wooden net shaped like honeycomb? What did it represent and why did it feel so sinister? I knew that snow often represents purity. Was this some kind of message?
When I had gone to bed, I had been thinking of the pervading lies and deception that are infiltrating the Church. Especially from some who are now being found to be false prophets who misuse and abuse the word of the Lord. Words are being twisted and stories are being woven by compromised men who seek to cover up their sin. Was my dream a response to my concerns?
As I searched and prayed, I found that honey and honeycomb often refers to words being spoken. That which we taste and eat. The common admonition is to eat God’s Word like honey (Psalm 119:103). And yet, in my dream, this honeycomb net was hard and manmade. Almost like a silent plague of words.
For the lips of a forbidden woman drip honey, and her speech is smoother than oil, but in the end she is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a two-edged sword (Proverbs 5:3-4).
Set a guard, O Lord, over my mouth; keep watch over the door of my lips! Do not let my heart incline to any evil, to busy myself with wicked deeds in company with men who work iniquity, and let me not eat of their delicacies (Psalms 141:3-4)!
I believe this parable in the night is a warning about taking in the words of those given to sin. There are voices among us who are seeking to take us in through their smooth talk and deceptive words. Hoping to win us over through flattery or vain promises, they want us to receive their words as truth, when in fact they are lies. Do not desire his delicacies, for they are deceptive food (Proverbs 23:3).
We need to guard our hearts from the influence of deceptive words by establishing God’s Word as a buffer. Gods Word is pure and holy. It cleanses us and keeps us from any compromise and deception. We must establish His Word as greater than any words spoken through those who claim to know His voice, but have hardened their hearts and despise the true word of the Lord.
Thus says the Lord of hosts: “Do not listen to the words of the prophets who prophesy to you, filling you with vain hopes. They speak visions of their own minds, not from the mouth of the Lord" (Jeremiah 23:16).
In a dream the other night, I was watching a gathering where a woman was beginning to lead worship. She was describing her situation which was bleak and dry. I saw a rock sticking out of the ground as she described a hardness of soil and things not going well.
And yet in spite of this, she began to speak of her faith in God and her unwavering hope in His promise to come through. She was standing alone, and yet her faith was resolute in a God that would not let her down. She began to weep and I woke up feeling the depth of her cry in the midst of a seemingly hopeless situation.
I sensed an exhortation to never give up in our faith. When faced with impossible odds, our flesh wants to give in, take control, and save ourselves. But true faith in God is willing to wait for His response, defying the natural order in order to give Him alone the glory.
As I woke up in tears, feeling the depth of this woman’s cry, I thought of Habakkuk 3:17-19:
“Though the fig tree should not blossom, nor fruit be on the vines, the produce of the olive fail and the fields yield no food, the flock be cut off from the fold and there be no herd in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the LORD; I will take joy in the God of my salvation. GOD, the Lord, is my strength; He makes my feet like the deer's; He makes me tread on my high places.”
I believe there may be some who bear witness with this dream. Perhaps having to stand before others, you are determined to declare the faithfulness of God, even in the midst of your own barrenness. But know that your witness and testimony of faith is powerful. It is being heard and recorded. It carries weight and moves heaven. And it will move things in the natural, as well, as you fix your gaze on Him and never lose your song of praise. He will not fail you.
