[WATCH] The Gauteng government is being blamed for neglecting the plight of residents in the Kya Sands informal settlement. Litter continues to be dumped everywhere, leaving residents with no option but to burn the built-up rubbish. @Vee_Makhoali reports.

After the DA’s opposition to VAT in cabinet, parliament and the court, Treasury had no choice but to reverse its VAT hike decision. Our decisive court action has delivered its intended result. At every step, the DA fought to protect South Africans. 🇿🇦

🚯 #StopIllegalDumping#KyaSand
14 February 2025 Time 15h30 - Cllr Devon Steenkamp
Dear Community
You may have noticed JMPD vehicles stationed at various points in the area as part of an operation aimed at tackling illegal dumping. However, despite their presence, illegal dumping and burning continues, Shockingly, even when I was on-site with the MMC for Environment and Infrastructure Services and his department, fresh illegal dumping was occurring right under the noses of law enforcement.
The City is now legally obligated to conduct an air quality test due to a court order secured by the Kya Sand Wasteland Community Forum,a testament to how residents have had to take matters into their own hands to force accountability.
I have repeatedly requested meetings with various departments for progress reports and engagements, but these have been ignored. I will continue escalating this issue to national government to ensure action is taken.
Even more concerning is that, as the elected Ward Councillor, I have not been invited to discussions about this crisis, demonstrating that the MMC is not interested in listening to the community's voice.
To truly combat illegal dumping, our by-laws must be strengthened. Last year, I submitted a motion to increase JMPD presence at every entry and exit of Kya Sand, and it will serve before Council at the end of February.
In response to the crisis, the EISD department is planning to establish a controlled transfer site at the old landfill site in Kya Sand, where rubble and materials can be legally dropped off under Pikitup’s management. While this could be a step in the right direction, the City's poor planning and failure to properly implement solutions remain glaring issues.
I will not stop holding this government accountable, and I urge residents to continue sharing evidence of dumping and burning that i will relay to the departments.
Kind regards
Cllr Devon Steenkamp

I'm pleased to report that the City Parks team has started clearing vegetation today and will continue working tomorrow and Sunday. This includes cutting down trees to improve accessibility for JRA to conduct regular maintenance and clear blockages that contribute to flooding.
