@CaraAl26949@memeticsisyphus Thus, the existence of white victims of lynching doesn't demonstrate the thesis that many 21st-century American conservatives want to make.
@CaraAl26949@memeticsisyphus Sometimes, the transgressors were "white ethnics", sometimes the transgressors were white civil rights activists, but most of the time, the transgressors were Black.
@CaraAl26949@memeticsisyphus I'm not disputing the systemic racism in the North. I'm just saying that Lynching in the South is inseperably intertwined with their racial caste system. White victims of lynchings are invariably from marginalized groups such as Mormons, Catholics, Jews or Civil Rights Activists.
@CaraAl26949@memeticsisyphus The purpose of focusing on the descendants of the planter elite is because lynchings in the South served to reinforce the hierarchy of racial castes that dominated that area from 1877 to 1968.
@CaraAl26949@memeticsisyphus Carpetbaggers were liberal northern Republicans who opposed the racial caste system of Jim Crow. They lost power after the end of Reconstruction.
@CaraAl26949@memeticsisyphus "immigrants, Italians, Jews, and Mormons"
None of these represent the antebellum planter elite nor do they represent their descendants.
@Meow_Arf12@memeticsisyphus It's probably significant to note that this event occurred during the brief time when Black men voted in South Carolinian elections even though Reconstruction had formally ended a decade before.
