There were a few gags in the games that played with the paper aesthetic, but it was mainly just an artstyle, not a literal paper world.

@Dewndeym I think the reason the Mario RPG remake works better than the BDSP remakes is because Mario RPG was intended to look this way even back then. We're getting a remake that basically makes Mario RPG look like all the promotional artwork it had back then and it just works.

@JonComms I think one big issue is that three of the games, NSMB2, NSMBU and NSLU all came out in a very short about of time. Less than a year between each entry, I believe? That accounts for pretty much half of the entries in the series
