🇮🇱 The 120-Minute Battle That Demolished Soviet Defense Doctrine

When discussing air superiority, June 9, 1982, is a date still studied at West Point and NATO academies. Operation Mole Cricket 19 during the First Lebanon War wasn't just a battle, it was the total liquidation of the Syrian air defense array in the Beqaa Valley. It served as a definitive demonstration of Western technological dominance over Soviet hardware.

The mission targeted 19 dense Syrian surface-to-air missile (SAM) batteries. The aerial theater saw roughly 90 Israeli fighters face off against nearly 100 Syrian MiGs. By the end of the engagement, 29 missile batteries were destroyed and 82 Syrian jets were shot down. The Israeli Air Force suffered zero losses.

The success relied on a revolutionary tactic: the first large-scale use of UAVs as decoys. The Syrians saw targets on their radar, locked on, and fired. The moment the Syrian radars began transmitting, Israeli Phantoms intercepted the frequencies and launched anti-radiation missiles that homed in on and destroyed the radar stations. With the "eyes" of the batteries gone, the missile launchers themselves were sitting ducks.

When the Syrians scrambled fighter jets to intervene, Israeli F-15s and F-16s were already waiting. Supported by Hawkeye E-2C airborne command aircraft, Israeli pilots saw the Syrians taking off in real time. The resulting dogfights were entirely one-sided. The Soviet leadership refused to believe the reports and dispatched an emergency delegation from Moscow to Damascus to understand how their most advanced weaponry had been systematically dismantled in just two hours.

She died fighting, on her terms, stripping the Nazis of their illusion of total control and proving that even in the abyss, defiance endures.
