I've long said that we're too late to decide that we don't want AI. Decades of development has led to the inevitable... so whether if kills us all is not longer a discussion.
Then I heard from some smart folks on living with AI, especially the crowd a "Beneveloent AGI" conferend by @bengoertzel back in 2024. Ben drew experts from around the world.. and the scary senarios were silly. Two keynotes included 787max crashes as AI disasters. That planed didn't have AI in control.
This was a tiny part of our 4 days in Panama.. mostly learning from expert in small discussions. What I left with was
1) We're already in AGI
2) We aren't going to control it for long
Then, more recently, I learned how many ways AI is being used to increase human flourishing. It's no longer a probablity.. it's happening. Just this week, AI found the PHP vulnerablity and many AIs got busy and fixed it.
The point being that the vulnerablity had been there for years. Had a hacker found it, we could have had a disaster.
Add this to the 170,000 people who die each day from causes we are close to eliminating and it becomes urgent that we move on using AI, SI, or whatever you want to call it, to get the research and implemttion on these out faster.
Lives are at stake!
We are coming up on Halloween so I'm thinking about scary stories.
I think we can do it in two words: "Government AI"
What two words are the most scary for you?
@CaseyChesh I was in favor of p(Boom) but the tshirt all came with Doom so I calculated my number
< 0 is mathematically in error but refllects my attitude on it
@TheEinarkist your are catching what I'm dishing or some other twisted mixed metaphor in the space.
"two words" is an attempt make it sound easy. Doesn't work well for me. I'm usually better at getting responses to polls or open ended questions.
We're aligned except when we aren't
@GoldNutter I feel for you. I see such unimaginable progress and often feel left behind. Sometimes I say that I’m just waiting for my investments to pay off.. most often I’m wondering about my ability to crash and burn right before the big payoff. :)
@WarrenWhitlock@grok can you make an image that illustrates the poetry of “I think of you as in my shadow that disappears when a brighter light illuminates you. “
@Thionne_WTZ@PeterDiamandis It’s always this way. To focus on the very few that truly beleive their abundance comes from taking from other is to be looking in the relm of politicians.
The biggest pushback on my presentations about abundance is how it may help only the rich.
Not my experience. The most productive positive people I know agree with @PeterDiamandis … there world isn’t a better place if we think we can leave some behind.
I do not want a positive story that asks people to look away from suffering, but one that points to a place where suffering declined, names what worked, and invites more people to finish the job.
If that were anywhere close to how things happen, I would have spent my life getting close to those in the 1%, no other course would make sense.
I hold that personal responsibility has to account for how my life turns out. For me, I believe it’s most of the cause. I know there are cases that can be made for other factors but I laugh out loud when I look at the nonsensical thretoric that comes from assuming a bad outcome is a successful guy’s evil plan.
Nope. I just don’t agree with your percentage allocations. I’m most likely wrong using 10%, I think all children should have individual attention.
I can’t agree with most kids being left behind. That’s absurd. Just by mathematical structure, the majority aren’t left behind.. they are the average. One could say that the average need to be better (I’d agree, our education system is stuck in the 1800’s) but anytime I see the majority labeled as victims, I question the logic.
Ha. I thought of that after posting.. of course you’ll confuse that sentence as me stating that the two are the same. That’s how ad hominem attacks work. Find some words and accuse the writer of deeper subtext.
Sorry, It’s not so clear but you are way off base. I didn’t mean to associate the two has having anything in common except their milquetoast-y outcomes.
I favor finding the 10% who need extra help and giving it to them. I don’t hold up the pack while doing it.
As for douchebags, I’ve met plenty from every persuasion.
I don’t know who you are attacking here. If you want to lump me into your evil capitalist meme, so be it. I’m comfortable getting a laugh and knowing my own intents.
@LarryRosenthal I suppose you are a fan of No Child Left Behind and Communism.
I do see the appeal. Although anything like that would make me even more of a sore thumb.
That’s a wonderful example of how government makes everything worse.
1. An apparent genuine endorsement of tech that ‘super’
2. Overbearing EO
3. Agencies left to interpret the goal.
4. Nonsensical popup
I’m straining to see good intentions though that’s typical in any process that start such processes.
If NIH were not government, the market might give us superior outcomes. Regardless, there’d be less of this nonsense.
