@Johnny_Marr Dear Johnny and family,
Music lovers and musicians in NZ are so very sad for your loss. He really was a remarkable bass player among other gifts. I have been listening to the early recordings over the last week and wondering at the intricate, playful, and driving bass. Unique.
It was a joy to wrap-up the conference at NZ Parliament for 50 years of embassy relations between New Zealand and Chile. There were many excellent moments but the highlights for me were @HelenClarkNZ and her personal insights and hearing from a young Latino DJ from Christchurch.
@dbseymour Give it a rest David with your personality based superficialities. Odd that the name of the most myopic party in Govt is led by somebody called Seymour. Also odd that your MPs are housed in Parliament library given that your reps are least likely to have actually read a book.
Here is a bit of silly geographical reflection by myself on how the English re-named the places of Aotearoa during the colonial period. In all of their wisdom. Yeah right! on An Englishman in New Zealand Episode 1 ‘Know Your Place’ https://t.co/cDWGbhKHGR via @YouTube
@POTUS We in Aotearoa New Zealand mourn your profound loss President Biden and the USA. We also thank you for reminding us of the words of dearly departed Queen Elizabeth: ‘Grief is the price of love’. Many here would agree wholeheartedly. Sincere condolences and deep affection.
@UjuAnya I respect your broader opinion whilst rejecting your call an ‘excruciating death’. It is below a person of your stature, purpose and learning to speak so cruelly. We dream of the end of colonialism in Aotearoa and the shackles that funded it. What do you make of this?
History is the future! My letter to the Editor, Dominion Post 22/03/22. Well done curriculum writers, insistent teachers, concerned parents, Min of Ed staff, Labour Government and Greens, and most of all curious and clever pupils who have been asking for NZ history for many years
@HelenClarkNZ It is beyond disgusting. Words fail all decent humans. The 75 years of multilateral rules-based peace in Europe and in the UN lie in tatters. Years of diplomacy up in smoke. I ask where, how and when will this end? Stronger response from NZ required!
Transition in Chile began with students. Resisted Pinochet & paid in tears & lives, marched against neoliberal education for decades. Violeta Parra wrote ‘Me gustan los estudiantes’ (1962). 50 years on her plea crystallised. Students YOU CAN change the world! Please do so!
Today, Chile is light in a dark world. Transition from dictatorship (73-90) through brutal years of neoliberalism - despite reforms by Lagos and Bachelet - nears completion. New dawn over the Andes. But, Senate & Deputies are split. The new constitution will deliver the future.
Aotearoa very proud of Chile today. Manahi Pakarati (see photo) is new Chief of Protocol, first indigenous or female! From Rapa Nui, she was a diplomat in NZ, Master in Strategic Studies #VUW, as well as kind & funny aunty to my girls when little. Vamos Tía Manahi! Viva Chile!
Unique political moment in Chile’s troubled history. 36 y.o Gabríel Boric is President! His cabinet is majority female and for the first time the Chief of Protocol is female and indigenous (Rapa Nui). Que día mas lindo! Al fin el pueblo chileno puede cumplir su destino en el sol!
@nealejones He is a political chancer Neale and this divisive rhetoric will see him branded as such. I thought he was a man of integrity but to use the situation for party political gain is just as shameful as the protest itself.
@nealejones Yes. It’s a disgrace isn’t it. Our mayor in Martinborough is putting a Bob both ways too, eyeing the next election. These folks are causing the very divisions that they suggest they wish to heal. Mr Luxon is a prize hypocrite. And don’t get me started on Mr Peters and Mr Seymour!
