Saving Israel's alliance with Liberal America at @lib_ra_el
🇮🇱🇺🇦🇺🇸
Thank you, and God Bless America.

The term “Shylock” is rooted in a longstanding antisemitic stereotype. Regardless of intent, its use can reinforce harmful tropes about Jews and normalize language that has long been used to target the Jewish community.

What makes the West worth defending?
Strength, pride, and the courage to stand up against evil are essential - but they are not enough. When Secretary Marco Rubio called on "the West" to rediscover its greatness at the Acropolis in Athens, he invoked one of the foundations of Western civilization, while forgetting the other: Jerusalem.
The Jewish tradition teaches that every human being is created in the image of God - that human dignity is inherent, not earned.
Together, Athens and Jerusalem offer a vision of a civilization that is both strong and humane: one that defends itself while upholding freedom, justice, and the dignity of all people. Both America and Israel need the strength to defend themselves - and the moral compass to know what they’re defending.

What makes the West?
Athens offers courage, Jerusalem reminds us that every human being has inherent worth.
Both America and Israel need the strength to defend themselves, and the moral compass to know what they’re defending.

Israelis should notice the rhetorical (unfortunately brilliant) move by Dr. El-Sayed: he doesn't talk about genocide in Gaza, nationalist violence in the West Bank, and certainly not about an ethnostate.
Instead, he focuses on something much more fundamental - money and wars - that every American can relate to (who likes having their money taken? Who likes being "dragged" into wars?).
And on this basis, using kitchen table issues, El-Sayed manages to introduce a stance hostile to Israel into the American discourse, one whose underlying roots are clearly much deeper than just the material aspect.
His worldview, which sees Israel as a state born in sin and inherently a racial injustice, remains "behind the scenes," while at the front, there is a discourse of general social justice. Therefore, confronting his core worldview and trying to "expose" him as an extreme far-left, pro-Islamic figure who hates America (assuming he even is, which for our purposes is less relevant) is doomed to fail.
Faced with this, Israel and its supporters must do two things:
1. Pull the rug out from under his feet.
We must stop asking for money and stop encouraging the US to join our wars. Many Americans have a healthy intuition that they don't fully understand the complexities of the conflict, who is right, and what is appropriate - but everyone understands when money is "taken" from them and when they are "dragged" into wars.
Will this make him and the camp behind him love us? Of course not. As mentioned, these "kitchen table issues" arguments are merely a mask to hide his deep view of Israel.
But if we pull the rug out from under his feet, he will be left with abstract, post-materialist arguments that are relevant only to a minority within American society, especially in a state like Michigan. If he continues to dwell on them, he will be exposed for who he is ("Why are you so obsessed with Israel?").
2. Strengthen his opponents.
For every El-Sayed, there are 4-5 Democrats who still view Israel as an American friend and partner, even if a challenging and complex one. They take fire from both sides: from the hard Democratic base, which mocks them for even attempting to work with Israel, and from pro-Israel voices in America (mostly Republicans), who depict them as having surrendered to "the woke who took over the party".
Confronting the "symbols" of the anti-Israel camp in the party - El-Sayed, Mamdani, Tlaib, and soon Chevalier - elevates them to prominence, giving them overproportionate weight and power ("If they're attacking me, it means I'm right").
By contrast, strengthening the other camp - liberal and/or progressive Democrats who still see Israel as an ally, even if they have tough questions - can turn the tables. Giving this camp arguments, answers, narratives, and above all, victories (tackling nationalist crime in the West Bank as a start) will allow them to prove that the way to advance democratic values in the Middle East is not through confrontation with Israel, but through dialogue with it while addressing its needs and interests ("Honey catches more flies than vinegar").
I know this because I've seen it. I've seen progressive members of Congress and Senators shift how they speak about Israel and the war the moment they received narratives and arguments to explain to their constituents why supporting Israel and cooperating with it are not only strategically smart, but also morally right. An advisor to a progressive Congresswoman - one of those considered a lost cause in Israel - explicitly told me that such actionable arguments is "exactly the kind of thing we need to justify to our voters why Israel can be supported."
And this is the time to share: in exactly two weeks, I am flying to the US on behalf of @lib_ra_el for meetings of this exact kind - to convince Democratic lawmakers that there is a way to support Israel without feeling like they are betraying their values. This trip could not have happened without the support of our donors, many of whom are right here on this feed, and they deserve every bit of thanks and appreciation.
To join us and help us reach more Democratic lawmakers to build this counter-movement of pro-Israel progressives, donate to us here: https://t.co/4N98ILz17U
Democratic candidate Abdul El-Sayed shared his views on U.S.-Israel relations, saying he does not consider Israel an American ally: “I think it’s time for us to realize that Israel is not actually our friend.”
