🚨 #ExpressInvestigation | The Union Minister of State for Agriculture Bhagirath Choudhary received a ₹99.03 lakh subsidy for a commercial cucumber farming project under a scheme run by the ministry he serves in.

While the final approval was granted by an NHB project approval committee that does not include the minister, Choudhary is the ex-officio Vice-President of the NHB board that oversees its functioning.

The project, worth ₹1.99 crore, was among 467 approved under the scheme in 2025.

#AyodhyaRamMandir | The opacity around Ram Janmabhoomi Teertha Kshetra’s dealings is unsurprising, given how the Modi government has operated over the years.

The RJTK overpaid for land and subverted usual procurement procedures, allowing intermediaries to make windfall gains, even as the government obstructed all attempts at seeking transparency and the institutions meant to hold it to account gave it a clean chit under questionable circumstances.

That this corruption was carried out in Ram’s name highlights the hypocrisy of the Hindu Right but is not surprising either, given how lucrative the business of religion is in India and the political capital Modi has already accumulated through displays of piety.

While the processes by which the land was acquired to construct the Ram temple will soon be forgotten in the pageantry surrounding its inauguration, they serve as an instructive episode on what progress looks like in Modi’s New India.

एक लड़की ने अपनी माँ से कहा, “अम्मी, मैं अपने बॉयफ्रेंड के साथ हम-बिस्तर होना चाहती हूँ...???

मुझे इजाज़त दे दो...

माँ बड़ी अक्लमंद थी۔ उसने कुछ सोचा और बोली,

“ठीक है बेटी, मैं इजाज़त दूँगी, लेकिन पहले एक हफ़्ते तक तुम्हे मेरी एक शर्त पूरी करनी होगी...???

शर्त ये थी कि हर रोज़ सुबह लड़की बादशाह के महल के सामने जाए, और जब बादशाह अपना क़ाफ़िला लेकर निकले तो ज़मीन पर बेहोश की तरह गिर पड़े, फिर जो कुछ भी हो उसे आकर माँ को सच-सच बताए।

पहला दिन....

लड़की गिरी। बादशाह ख़ुद घोड़े से उतरा, और उसने लड़की को अपने हाथों उठाया, हालत देखी, दवाइयाँ दिलवाईं और सुरक्षित घर पहुँचाने का हुक्म दिया।

दूसरा दिन....

लड़की फिर गिरी। इस बार बादशाह ने मुड़कर भी नहीं देखा, आगे बढ़ गया। और वज़ीर ने दौड़कर उसे उठाया, कपड़े झाड़े और चला गया।

तीसरा दिन.....

लड़की ने ख़ास तौर पर वज़ीर के सामने गिरने की कोशिश की।

मगर इस बार वज़ीर ने भी आँखें फेर लीं। और सेनापति ने आकर उसे सँभाला।

चौथा दिन....

सेनापति ने भी नज़रअंदाज़ कर दिया।

एक साधारण सिपाही ने उठाया।

पाँचवाँ दिन....

सिपाही भी नहीं रुके। रास्ते में चलते एक आम राहगीर ने रुककर उसे उठाया ।

छठा दिन....

लोगों ने लातें मार-मार कर उसे रास्ते से हटाया। फिर एक भिखारी ने उसे उठाया और किनारे की तरफ ले गया।

सातवाँ दिन....

कोई इंसान नहीं रुका। एक आवारा कुत्ता आया और उसके मुँह-चेहरे को चाटने लगा।

सात दिन पूरे हुए तो माँ ने बेटी को गले लगाया और धीरे से समझाया...

“बेटी, यही होता है इस समाज में।

जब कोई लड़की पहली बार ‘गिरती’ है, तो सबसे पहले कोई बादशाह या बिगड़ा हुआ अमीरज़ादा उसकी इज़्ज़त लूटता है। फिर उसे अपने से थोड़े छोटों के लिए छोड़ देता है। फिर छोटे उसे और छोटों के लिए।

धीरे-धीरे यही लड़की एक दिन गली के कुत्तों और लफंगों के लिए सस्ता माल बन कर रह जाती है, जिसे कोई उठाने की ज़हमत भी नहीं करता, बल्कि लात मारकर रास्ते से हटा दिया जाता है।

इसलिए बेटी, अपनी इज़्ज़त को कभी ज़मीन पर गिरने नहीं देना। क्योंकि जो एक बार गिर गई, उसे पहले तो शहंशाह उठाते हैं, मगर आख़िर में गली का कुत्ता भी नाक सिकोड़कर चला जाता है।

श्याम प्रसाद मुखर्जी 1929 में कांग्रेस की तरफ़ से बंगाल लेजिस्लेटिव कौंसिल में कलकत्ता विश्विद्यालय के प्रतिनिधि के तौर पर चुनाव लड़े और जीते।

अगले साल जब कांग्रेस ने ब्रिटिश क्राउन के प्रति विद्रोह जताते हुए असेंबली का बॉयकॉट किया तो इससे नाराज़ हो मुखर्जी ने कांग्रेस छोड़ दी।

इसके बाद वह निर्दलीय चुनाव लड़े और असेंबली के मेम्बर बन गए।

1941 में भारत छोड़ो आंदोलन के दौरान कांग्रेस ने सभी मंत्रालय से इस्तीफ़ा दिया। इसके बाद श्यामा प्रसाद मुखर्जी ने बंगाल में फ़ज़ल हक़ के नेतृत्व वाली बंगाल सरकार का हिस्सा बनने का फ़ैसला लिया। वह इस सरकार में वित्त मंत्री भी रहे।

फ़ज़ल हक़ ने 1940 में एक लाहौर रेजोल्यूशन पेश किया था। इसे पाकिस्तान की नींव का सबसे प्रमुख दस्तावेज़ कहा जाता है। जिसके चलते फ़ज़ल हक़ को पाकिस्तान का संस्थापक पिता कहा जाता है।

श्याम प्रसाद यह सब जानते हुए भी फ़ज़ल हक़ की सरकार का हिस्सा बने।

मुखर्जी ने भारत छोड़ो आंदोलन के दौरान बंगाल के गवर्नर जॉन हरबर्ट को एक पत्र लिखा। इस पत्र में उन्होंने बताया की कैसे वह हर संभव कोशिश करेंगे ताकि भारत छोड़ो आंदोलन को दबाया जा सके।

सन 1946 में मुखर्जी ने बंगाल के विभाजन की माँग की।उन्होंने माउंटबेटन को पत्र लिखा जिसमें साफ़ तौर पर कहा की अगर भारत का विभाजन नहीं भी हो रहा तो भी बंगाल का विभाजन होना चाहिए।

खैर आज श्यामा प्रसाद मुखर्जी की पुण्यतिथि है। उन्हें कोटि-कोटि नमन!

Within the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau itself, there was less certainty about the cause of the crash of Air India 171 in Ahmedabad on 13 June 2025. @rachelchitra spoke to a subject-matter expert at the AAIB, who wished to remain anonymous. (Days after the crash, the civil-aviation ministry had issued an unofficial gag order on its officials speaking to the media, even banning journalists from entering the ministry building.) They told me that the independence of the investigation had been compromised very early by the companies leading the aviation industry.

“The preliminary report was a negotiated deal between Air India, Tata, GE and Boeing—GE to a lesser extent,” the expert said. “But the slew of emails being exchanged in the days running up to the 12 July 2025 deadline was primarily between the airline and the manufacturer. The Indian and US regulators were on standby.” Tata owns a majority stake in Air India and General Electric manufactured the crashed flight’s engine. The companies, the expert added, were negotiating which parts of the findings should be released until moments before publication. “The document was released a little past midnight, and I suspect it largely had to do with Boeing’s desire to influence public perception by targeting Western audiences first.”
