The ones who WERE married at that age were often forced to marry because they were pregnant (sometimes even from rape or incest). Less than 3% were married between the ages of 15-19

The girls Joseph Smith molested likely had not developed breasts or even started puberty yet. It’s gross. Stop pretending they were 22. They were children.

@Devin_Card @backl_ash @emancipatedteri Marrying teenagers more than 15 years younger than you was not common then and it is not common now. Fourteen year olds were children then and now. Adding 8 years makes you feel more comfortable about it, but it’s meaningless. They were not 22. They were 14.

During the 19th century, the average age fell for women, but it didn’t drop lower than 22. The prevailing modern idea that girls wed before leaving their teenage years is well off the mark.

@Devin_Card @emancipatedteri The 1835 edition of D&C bans polygamy. The “sealing” power was not restored until 1836 when Elijah appeared and conferred the sealing keys upon Joseph. So, Joseph’s marriage to Fanny Alger in 1833 was illegal under both the laws of the land & “divine authority”
