Water Safety Ireland’s Education Officer Jamie and Education Manager Anna were proud to attend the inaugural Swim Ireland Open Water Swim Conference this weekend in Athlone.
Jamie delivered an insightful session on water safety for experienced open water swimmers as part of Water Safety Ireland’s National Water Safety Awareness Week.
They are pictured with the Swim Ireland team, who delivered a fantastic conference, and the inspirational Daragh Morgan - the Irish adventure athlete who completed a record‑setting swim around the entire coastline of Ireland in 5 months and 17 days.
It doesn’t start in the water.
A familiar route home can become risky in a moment. Stay aware and respect the risk 💙

From a dramatic rescue off the Australian coast to an emotional TV surprise reunion with his grandparents in Ireland, Austin Appelbee’s story has touched hearts around the world.
During a special RTÉ presentation on Friday’s Late Late Show, host Patrick Kielty presented 13 year-old Austin with Water Safety Ireland’s “Seiko Just In Time Award” to recognise his incredible 4km swim to raise the alarm that rescued his mother and two siblings after they were swept out to sea while paddle-boarding and kayaking near Perth earlier this year. Austin’s mother, Joanne Appelbee, is originally from Co.Monaghan.
Congratulations Austin, a true inspiration! 👏⌚

Water Safety Ireland extends our deepest condolences to the family of Kathleen O’Connor (née Redmond), Co. Wexford, who passed away peacefully on 9th April 2026.
Kathleen was a wonderful example of a Wexford Water Safety Ireland Volunteer Organiser who gave selflessly throughout her time with WSI, dedicating herself to teaching generations of children.
Our sympathies are with Kathleen’s family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing her.
