Episode 5 – The Next Wave of Indigenous Collaboration

Indigenous languages, knowledge and ways of life have shaped Toronto’s waterfront for generations and continue to inform its future.

In The Next Wave of Indigenous Partnerships, Kristina Verner, Vice-President, Strategic Policy and Innovation at Waterfront Toronto, and Fred Martin, Senior Project Manager with the City of Toronto’s Indigenous Affairs Office, explore how Indigenous leadership, relationships, language and ways of knowing are helping shape the next chapter of waterfront revitalization.

What if nature wasn’t an afterthought to city-building, but the first step? Our approach of leading with landscape means parks and natural systems play a big role in how the waterfront is being transformed. Azure Magazine explores how working with nature has helped us build a waterfront ready for the future. https://t.co/l4J6OfMg4w

Earlier this month we attended the Leading with Landscape Symposium at @UofTDaniels. The event looked back on 25 years of waterfront revitalization, and how our approach of building great public spaces first has catalyzed the creation of great new neighbourhoods, connections to the water, and exciting destinations. Thanks for having us!

The symposium included an installation at the Daniels Faculty with models of the waterfront, 3D topographical maps, photos, and miniature mock-ups of landscape features. The installation is viewable to the public through November.

Episode 4 – The Next Wave of Sustainability

At Waterfront Toronto, sustainability is built into our work from the start, from the infrastructure and public spaces we deliver to the standards we set for new development and how we work with our partners.

In The Next Wave of Sustainability, Aaron Barter, Vice President, Program Integration and Sustainability, shares how we’re creating a waterfront where people and nature can thrive together, while building a model for a sustainable, resilient city.

Over the past 25 years, Toronto’s waterfront has changed quite a bit.

One of the best examples is the Water's Edge Promenade. Section by section, it has transformed former industrial shorelines into public spaces where people can gather, connect, and enjoy the waterfront.

Today we joined The Rekai Centres to celebrate a major milestone at Cherry Place in Toronto's West Don Lands.

The new 348-bed Campus of Care will bring long-term care, health care and education together in one place. Residents, students and the community will be close neighbours. It's a new model of care and learning, built for a growing community.

It is also the first project from the Building Ontario Fund, and a great example of what partners can build together.

Congratulations to The Rekai Centres and to everyone helping bring this campus to the waterfront, including @ONlongtermcare, @NatKusendova, @GBPolytech, @LifeLabs, the @cityoftoronto, and @WaterfrontTO.

Episode 3 – The Next Wave of Transit

No matter how you choose to get around, the waterfront is becoming easier, safer and more inviting to reach and explore.

From improved roads and new pedestrian and cycling connections east of the Don River to the East-West Water Shuttle across the inner harbour, we’re improving connections on land and water as part of our work to create a more connected waterfront.

In the latest episode of The Next Wave, Pina Mallozzi and Patrick Meredith-Karam share how these initiatives, together with the next generation of waterfront transit, are helping create a waterfront that’s easy and safe to get to, however you choose to move.

A restored river valley deserves its most famous engineers.

This week, the Lassonde Art Trail culminatesits launch season with the unveiling of The Colony (2026) by acclaimed Cree artist Kent Monkman at Biidaasige Park. The Colony is a playful reminder of the animals that have helped shape ecosystems across Turtle Island.

Through the Port Lands Flood Protection project, made possible by a $1.4 billion investment from the Government of Canada, the Province of Ontario (@ONgov), and the City of Toronto (@cityoftoronto), former industrial lands have been transformed into a new river valley, thriving habitat, and world-class public spaces.

The Colony builds on that vision, demonstrating how art can enrich public spaces while creating new opportunities for people to connect with nature, water, and the histories that have shaped this place for generations.

On the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we honour the children who never returned home, Survivors of residential schools, and their families and communities.

At Waterfront Toronto, reconciliation is an ongoing commitment. We continue to deepen our relationship with the Treaty Holders, the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation (@mcfirstnation), and with other First Nations, and Indigenous partners, working to strengthen Indigenous presence and placekeeping and advance meaningful participation and shared benefit in Toronto's waterfront revitalization.

Today, we reflect, learn and recommit ourselves to advancing reconciliation.
