The news from PGA Tour of the sad passing of Grayson Murray earlier today is devastating, not just as somebody who writes about golf but also being a recovered alcoholic with 10 years sobriety.
The nature of this disease is insidious. They say that addiction is the disease, but using and drinking are simply the symptoms.
Just when you think things are getting better, it constantly tries to find ways to self-destruct. Finding ways to keep my life balanced, to find peace, and to rectify any wrongs in my life is a battle I still maintain on a daily basis to keep my sobriety.
I've lost many a friend to this disease, all far too young. Even those who don't drink again who end their life as tortured souls, when they haven't found peace and contentment in their life in the absence of substances.
Alcoholism and addiction is perhaps the most misunderstood disease in society. The general public can't have a little bit of diabetes. But my "normal" friends can have one beer and leave it.
As alcoholics, we can't. Alcohol and substances help us escape reality, and we see the sole purpose of alcohol as a vehicle to achieve that. If an alcoholic has one drink, invariably they think 10 will be better.
I've also had many a friend pass away whose bodies have been wrecked through years of abuse. Their cause of death gets listed as "heart attack" or "liver disease".
I can't pretend to know the finer details of what happened in this instance. But rest assured, whatever the coroner's report list as the cause of death it should really read "alcoholism".
I'll continue advocating and working for a better understanding of this disease. It will make society better in so many ways, but also mean we have less instances of the devastating news we all read today.
RIP Grayson Murray. I hope you find the peace you were so desperately searching for, and I'm sorry for you and your loved ones that you didn't find it in this world.

First of all, I’d like to thank my friends and family for the supper and God for the opportunity. After much consideration, I’ve decided to not enter the transfer portal and stick it out where I’m at. Coach says I’ve got “gumption”.
Me: Buying online- box to opt in to all the “hot deals” and new products. Uncheck. Them: cool, you’re getting this crap anyway. Gmail promo filter: not today satan!
Idk who needs to hear this, but I do not in any shape, form, or fashion give a damn that Arch Manning lost his student ID. If another article is written about this useless piece of info, I’m firing someone.
What he said (paraphrased) - Taxes pay for flyovers at football games. What old white men heard- I hate the military and all they stand for. Makes sense.
Sit down to order, five perfect English speaking servers wait on me. Call in- can’t understand the person who answers or brings me the food to pay when I get there.... #makessense#thai
