#OTD in 1729 Thomas Newcomen, inventor of the first practical steam engine died.
At the time flooding in coal and tin mines was a major problem and in 1712, he created a steam engine for the purpose of lifting water out of a mine.

Today would have been Port Glasgow's Comet Festival, a fun day out for the all the family. The event has been taking place since 1986 and we look forward to welcoming you back again in 2021.
The New River Company’s Pumping Station in Green Lanes, Stoke Newington. Built in 1854-6, it had 6 Boulton & Watt beam engines each 25ft in diameter weighing 35 tons, powered by 18 boilers. It was at risk of being demolished in the early 70s and saved following a local campaign.
