On 12 Feb 2021, the Cape Town High Court sentenced 5 thieves on 50 counts of copper cable theft, & sentenced them to a cumulative 1250 years in jail. The shortest jail term meted out was the minimum sentence of 15 years. The stolen copper cables belonged to both Eskom and Telkom
The copper cables were stolen between 2016 and 2018 in the Namaqualand and Western Cape regions.
Two other accused who were charged in the same matter died during the trial, and were found guilty posthumously.
