Bulbophyllum anjae J.J.Verm. & de Vogel, from section Polymeres, is a small endemic epiphyte found in the lower montane forests of New Guinea (1,600–1,800 m). It was named after Anja Anker Høeg in 2014 when it was first described.

A couple of interesting — and fairly unique — features of this species are:  
- the lip, which is almost completely smooth except for the hairy margins near the base, and  
- the petals, which are entirely papillose, giving them a soft, velvety appearance.

The flowers of this quite floriforus species bloom nearly synchronously across the entire population, lasting 6–7 days, and they carry a subtle musky scent. Although the flower shape is quite similar to those in section Papulipetalum, the widened column foot places it firmly in section Polymeres.

Apart from the specimen grown in the Hortus Botanicus Leiden, this is the only other plant of this species I've seen in cultivation.

Bulbophyllum triaristella Schltr., from section Peltopus, is a miniature, intermediate-growing epiphyte found in the lower montane forests of New Guinea (endemic, 1000–1800 m). The highly reflective flowers, marked with reddish-purple stripes running the length of the sepals, do not open fully until late morning and then mostly close again at night, repeating this process for 4–5 days. A mature plant of moderate size seems to be in bloom almost year-round. The pseudobulbs are no more than 2–3 mm in diameter, resemble a peeled tangerine, and are completely dwarfed by the comparatively large flowers! [video]

Another wonderful Dendrobium species from section Grastidium that I can't find a good match from known species but belongs to a group that is closely allied with D. longicaule https://t.co/fGMBvh4DVH. This large epiphytic plant is found growing in the lower montane forest of New Guinea (endemic, c.1600m). Plants produce inflorescences along the lateral apical portion (alternating sides between the leaves) of the pendant, continuously growing stems multiple times a year. Flowers, which have a beautiful fragrance, always come in pairs and bloom synchronously across the entire population, but they last only part of one day. A well flowered plant, like this one, is truly spectacular! [video]

This is not my largest clone of this species, but it's one of the nicest due to its rich color form and potent fragrance: Dendrobium sexcostatum de Vogel, from section Diplocaulobium subsection Goniobulbon, is a miniature (at least the individual growths are) intermediate-growing epiphyte found in the montane forests of New Guinea (1400–1600 m). These plants will have several growths blooming randomly throughout the year and then, usually two to three times a year in the months of October and November, all the plants will bloom en masse nearly synchronously. The densely clustered growths (like many of the other species from this section) will produce 1–2 flowers, lasting 4–5 days, on almost all of them. This species is one that was relatively recently described from this section (Malesian Orchid Journal Vol. 22, 2018), and the flower is very similar to that of D. stelliferum but with the striking distinction of having a beautifully warm vanilla-like fragrance that one can smell from several meters away! Dendrobium armeniacum P.J.Cribb, from section Latouria, is an endemic epiphyte found growing in the montane forest of New Guinea (1500-2400m). These plants are blooming now along with several of my other Latourias. Some interesting characteristics of this particular species are the slender pseudobulbs that tend to fall over or hang, leaves that are twisted at the base to lie in a single plane and very long lasting (6-7 weeks) fleshy almost wax-like flowers. Bulbophyllum aff. brachypus (Schltr.) J.J.Verm., from section Pedilochilus, is an erect to patent growing, sympodial epiphyte found in the lower montane forest of New Guinea (c.2400m) usually very low on tree trunks. Patent inflorescences are produced multiple times a year with a singular flower that has no detectable fragrance lasting 6-7 days. For such a small plant this species has remarkably large flowers in comparison. One unique feature of this flower are the semi-transparent windows at the base of the lateral sepals (--make sure you check those out). Also, while some species in this section are visually similar to Cypripedioideae, this one is not so much. [video]

Notes of interest:
~ Of the 35 known section Pedilochilus species, all are native to New Guinea but several are also found in some of the other South Pacific islands as well. The section has been poorly studied and superficially several species are very similar so it’s quite difficult to definitively identify these plants.
~ In general we don't see species of this section in cultivation for reasons that are not apparent to me; they really are spectacular!
