FOMO 01/12 – a yellow Post-it note signed by me – sold for $10,980 at Heritage Auctions. That’s 22× the $500 issue price.
From day one, FOMO was designed to create its own FOMO. The auction was part of that. This essay is too.
✦ THE CLAIM:
I think FOMO is a better piece of conceptual art than Maurizio Cattelan’s Comedian – the banana duct-taped to a wall.
Cattelan pointed a mirror at an existing absurdity. I engineered a machine to generate one.
Ten collectors paid $500 for the notes. I offered to buy any of them back for $1,000 – all they had to do was send one back. For four months, not a single person did.
Then the piece I sent to auction sold for $10,980, with the auctioneer using the title itself to play on bidders’ fear of missing out.
