Thought Experiment: Let's say a person commits an atrocious crime. Would you rather punish that person and make their life worse or increase their well-being (while still keeping them off the streets) if you knew that their increased well-being would be better for the world?
So many people are in prison, and have been for years, because of a single mistake - often made out of desperation, poverty or self-preservation. We can start to stop this cycle by discontinuing the stigma and acknowledging the humanity of those who end up being bars.
Speaking with people in prison, I hear a lot of tragic stories, but I also hear voices with hope, humility and wisdom. Today I was reminded to look for the rainbow after the storm ⛈🌈✨ Thought I might not be the only one who’d appreciate this today. #prisonpeptalk
One day our society will look back with disbelief at how badly we treated each other. Losing your freedom should not mean losing your humanity. Until then, we can be examples of the future world we want to create, and remind those in prison they are not forgotten 🖤✨
It’s been a year we won’t soon forget: full of ups and downs, laughter and tears, enduring loss and pushing through fears. Like many, we did our best to squeeze the juice out of all of life’s lemons. We are humbled by all the support and can’t wait to start dancing again soon!!
Citizens a century from now will study about prisons in their history lessons & wonder, "What were they thinking, why would U.S. cage millions of ppl instead of treating addiction, rehabilitating their deficiencies or retraining for their deficits?" CONCLUSION: HUMANITY FAILURE
When I was in prison, one of the saddest days each year was Xmas, the day I most wanted to see my family & couldn't. Today I'm thinking about everyone incarcerated. No matter who you are or what you did (or didn't) do, you deserve family.
An inmate at Brooklyn’s federal jail was thrown into solitary confinement for speaking out to the Daily News about the COVID-19 outbreak that has ravaged his unit in the lockup, his lawyer and the district’s top public defender said.

Visitation is canceled, they are on lockdown 24/7 without the ability to use the phone or computer, 10 mins. for showers 3x a week, and it's likely to be like this for months. AND YET, guards still aren't wearing masks. Dangerous and disrespectful doesn't begin to describe it.

Most, if not all, incarcerated ppl have been victims themselves before ever committing a crime. So when you hear “what about the victims” make sure to include the gruesome childhoods of those we incarcerate.
80 positive Covid cases today at the MDC in Brooklyn. The MDC has been denying medical care to people inside throughout this pandemic. This could have been prevented.

Tonight, I wrote to the warden of #MDCBrooklyn with @NydiaVelazquez about reports we’ve received of severely ill detainees who were not receiving medical attention. This is inhuman, it is unacceptable, and the abysmal record of the MDC demands immediate answers.
We are devastated to learn that the inmates at MDC are at major risk of contracting COVID-19, and many already have. Staying healthy while confined to a cell for 21-24 hours a day is hard enough, but the virus now makes that risk potentially fatal. #mdcbrooklyn#COVID#brooklyn
With the holidays coming up, it’s important to remember that while it’s hard enough to be separated from family and friends, a large portion of the incarcerated population doesn’t even have family to call, send cards or to help with commissary.
I speak with dozens of people in prison and this phenomenon is ever present. Whether it's having phone calls randomly disconnected, letters lost, or property confiscated for no reason, "the zo" should not be the status quo.
