A great article in the @guardian by @ollywainwright about successful Public Procurement in Belgium. A stream-lined process which results in high quality buildings. The hens teeth of procurement...

The built fabric of towns are much more than product of economics
If we are to address our housing crises meaningfully we need the state to recognise this and think intelligently about procurement - implementing innovations we developed 30 years ago

Great to see innovative procurement being tested in Ireland. Here Grangegorman back quality and balance it with tests of capacity in a really well run competition format- a model for others to follow.
Our Open Two-Stage Architectural Design Competition for @WeAreTUDublin FOCAS Research Institute has now concluded. From an incredible 40 submissions a winning team will be announced later this week. Here's a selection from Stage I.

Great to see innovative procurement like this going ahead. The GDA approach has been structured to get the highest quality building - delightful, practical and sustainable - using a fair and transparent competitive process.
FOCAS Architectural Competition Update!
After assessing almost 40 entries, we’ve started second-stage work with 5 super teams.
Our thanks to all that have engaged so far. The process continues!

Very welcomed platform from @archireland@RIAIOnline to share the ongoing work of @WeCanBuildBett1 in highlighting the risk the State faces by not considering ways to procure better buildings that capture long term value. It is not something we can set aside for another day.
#Procurement is broken. We need a new way.
"That leads to a strange..process where both parties are operating in the knowledge that the ultimate cost will differ from that agreed in the tender. You will never out-turn [deliver] at the tendered price..."

A lot of paperwork to basically say 'I am an Architect and I will do my job. Here's a reasonable price for the work I think I will do' @WeCanBuildBett1
Another great episode- teasing out what it’s like to set up a new practice in Ireland - and the fatalism that can sometimes result from our current procurement system.
Public work needn’t be large - needn’t be expensive- but it should be good.
Out now : Tom O Brien, Noreille Breen, Jennifer O Donnell + Andrew O Murchu talk about the limits and potentials of being "emerging", a public that may not want us, how big is big and how making work is like swimming through a bog.
Thanks for having us!
John Cole was great to hear from - Well worth @RIAIOnline and @procurement_ie talking to.
He set up an innovative quality oriented procurement system for health care in NI about 15yrs ago which includes nearly all of our suggestions in WCBB.
This is good from the Housing Agency - and useful to see how many of these projects were procured by design competition.
Ireland needs innovative thinking in how we design and make places to live - one way to do this is by engaging architects based on the merit of their ideas.
Our new report features case studies from Switzerland, Austria, France, Germany, the Netherlands and Denmark into innovations in design and construction of social, affordable and co-operative housing in Europe. https://t.co/QypgtpkkQu
@WeCanBuildBett1 good thread on Procurement difficulties faced by Dublin City Council when procuring Contractors for residential schemes. Same could be said for procurement of Design Teams in all sectors of construction.
This is interesting- a redesign of public procurement in the uk post Brexit, and a move to value over cost.
All of this was permissible under previous EU rules. But the rupture is provoking some innovation- and it would be very useful if Ireland used this impetus as well.
This is quite something: comprehensive overhaul of public procurement regulations proposed by UK government following end of transition period. https://t.co/Nt1havZIXg
This is important- a competition that seeks to redress inherent biases in the current system of procurement, via a carefully designed structure that allows architects compete on their ability, and protects the client.
One for others to watch and emulate perhaps.
