The most ambitious car-free scheme on the continent, Montréal pedestrianized 11 commercial arteries—totaling 9.4 km—in seven boroughs this summer.
A pandemic-era initiative pushed by business leaders, they have quickly become cherished destinations for locals and tourists alike.
@GerHerbert1 OperationBlindEye. I’m getting more and more convinced that we need a dedicated traffic offence force, the Gardaí have proven themselves inept at policing this stuff.
Dublin City Council would like to announce that the first of the measures contained in the Dublin City Transport Plan 2023 will come into effect from 25th August 2024. For more details on the new measures please click here: https://t.co/Mj8xVoDVNc
The Dublin City Centre Transport Plan will go ahead. The first measures — bus gates on the quays — will start in four weeks. Big thanks to everyone who helped get this across the line.
The bottom of Shop St, one of the most successful pedestrianised streets in the country, and the pedestrian crossings have been ripped out by @GalwayCityCo !
This is one of the most unsafe & ignorant displays of public vandalism I’ve seen from a local authority in a long while.
@Naughton3D @Louthfootball81 @GerHerbert1 American size vehicles shouldn’t be a benchmark for anything, angels of death. Swapping ICE cars for eCars will help with emissions alright. No NEED for SUVs though, too high, too heavy, less safe and more inefficient.
@Naughton3D @Louthfootball81 @GerHerbert1 Taller and heavier, yeah, that’s something society should discourage. Lower to the ground = less drag and safer in a crash. Less weight means less damage to public roads and less energy to move.
@Naughton3D @Louthfootball81 @GerHerbert1 Ah yeah, cars & SUVs have it, but they still hit people from time to time and if you’re going to get hit, I pick car.
@Naughton3D @Louthfootball81 @GerHerbert1 Are we being told that though? The OP shows tax would incentivise electric. It’s just, it would be just better for everyone if the average person that needs a car went for an electric CAR rather than an electric SUV.
@Naughton3D @Louthfootball81 @GerHerbert1 That’s aside from people not in cars being subject to more and more weight, nearer and nearer their vital organs, in a crash.
@Naughton3D @Louthfootball81 @GerHerbert1 So as we continue to swap out our car fleet for a SUV fleet, we continue to add more weight to the roads for the same amount of people transported, damaging roads faster…
@Naughton3D @Louthfootball81 @GerHerbert1 Not sure what you mean by buses but 50 people on a bus is far better than 50 people in 50 cars right?
The problem personal transport. 80kg humans tipping around town in 2500kg vehicles is ridiculous.
Bad for environment, road surfaces, liveability, safety of other road users.
Is a weight based tax for cars on the horizon? It's one of the options included in this year's Budget 2025 Tax Strategy Group papers on Energy and Vehicle Taxation.

@JohnFergusonDub@NiallQuinnLK73@Independent_ie Yeah, it’s classist to make it easier for kids to cycle to school
So a class-less society is one where we have motorways between all urban villages, so we can all be FORCED everywhere in cars (€1000s+)? Instead of cycling our bike (€100s)
Basically America+, that what u want?
