Pepe is spot on here. Schools can- and many do- move mountains to create cultures of dignity and clarity, but when a minority of parents routinely, reflexively undermine school expectations, it imbeds in the student a sense that defiance is normalised, which ironically makes it much harder to help that child to flourish as a member of the school community. Everyone suffers. @ASCL_UK
My 5th battlefields trip, 4th as group leader! Had a great time with great company. The staff were alright as well. As ever, thank you to Zeitgeist for an amazingly well run trip. @RWBAcademy@AscendLT
Here are some genuine fake news that the Whitehouse now spouts: 1. We have given over double what Europe has to Ukraine. ❌ In fact Europe has given more. 1/3
@reachfeltham@LouisEverett1 Is there any chance that you might run this session again? Some of your ideas seem really interesting and I’d love to find out more.
Education's biggest secret that lies in plain sight is this: the culture of many schools, and the outcomes of their students, is dominated by the social strata and economic circumstances of the cohort's families. Put simply, children from circumstances of poverty, neglect, abuse, lack etc are disproportionately exposed to risk factors that reduce and frustrate their opportunities to flourish at school and in life. This isn't (or shouldn't be) a controversial thing to say. 🧵
Of course this is probability not destiny: kids with every advantage can do badly. Children with nothing sometimes win everything. But when it comes to games of chance, the house usually wins.
Why do most kids grade so well in an independent school? It's not because of the teaching, which is very, very similar to state ed teaching. It's largely because of the social, cultural and educational capital inherited and absorbed from the home environment. Why do kids do so well in a grammar school? Because they are largely captured from the most able and academic cohort of children. Guess what happens when you put them all in one place? They do rather well. FANCY THAT.
We/ I were waiting for the @Ofstednews call for over 5 years from the start of my 2nd Headship for a school that hadnt been inspected since 2014, was outstanding and since merged with an upper school. So never inspected in its entirity and would not have been oustanding. As
Ed Davey is spot on here.
Now, more than ever, we need to break ties with America and focus on rebuilding our relationship with Europe.
You can’t have a “special relationship” with a treacherous fascist.
Our Year 7 boys Rugby team progressed to the Swindon schools rugby finals after a brilliant match with @AbbeyParkSchool 20 tries in total scored and some brilliant running rugby being played! Well done to all involved! ⚫️⚪️🏉
Thoughts on Starmer speech
Self-evidently highly political. Little in the way of policy, instead a framing of politics to come.
But there’s a paradox to it all
Hugely proud of all the staff and students at @RWBAcademy. They have worked incredibly hard to get the best results possible. For some that was grading in English and Maths, for others it was getting straight 9s. Success is relative and I’m happy to have played my part.
