Had a wonderful time yesterday at the Erbil Kurdish Book Exhibition signing my new book, "Saladin: A Kurdish Sufi with a Stolen Identity." Thank you to everyone who stopped by!
Palestinians, who constantly complain about oppression, built a monument in Jenin to honor Saddam Hussein, the brutal dictator who oppressed, tortured, displaced, and massacred the Kurdish people.
However, actions have consequences. In 2024, an Israeli bulldozer demolished the monument of this war criminal, flattening it to the ground.
Simple questions:
Why do 5 million Palestinians have the "right" to a state, but not 40-60 million freedom-seeking #Kurds?
Why are there endless marches & protests for Palestinians, but not Kurds?
Why is the UN obsessed with Palestinians, but doesn't give a damn about Kurds?
On the strategic importance of the Kurdish return to Afrin:
Ilham Ahmed, a senior Syrian Kurdish official, has visited her hometown of Afrin in northwest Syria for the first time since the Turkish takeover of 2018. Her visit coincides with the return of Afrin's Kurds to their homes, and the significance of that homecoming extends beyond the restoration of individual rights. Afrin is arguably the most ethnically coherent Kurdish pocket in Syria, and the most consequential geographically. Its proximity to the Mediterranean sets it apart from the Kurdish areas further inland, and that is precisely why Turkey moved against it first. The 2018 operation was not simply counter-insurgency. It was a calculated intervention to keep any Kurdish presence from consolidating near the Mediterranean coast, closing off a geographic possibility before it could take hold.
That possibility has not closed entirely. The return of Kurds to Afrin, and their overwhelming repopulation of it even under Syrian and Turkish military control, constitutes a meaningful demographic anchor in a location of genuine strategic weight. Afrin's demographic balance had been sharply altered after 2018: by the early 2020s Kurds had fallen from a majority to a plurality, with some accounts putting their share as low as 35%. Most estimates now place it back at 70 to 80%, and continued returns may push it higher. Military control and demographic reality are not the same thing, and history offers enough examples of the latter eventually reshaping the former to take the distinction seriously. A Kurdish Afrin, even a constrained one, is a different political fact than an emptied one.

After 9 years of absence, Îlham Ehmed, co-chair of the Department of Foreign Relations in the Autonomous Administration, and a native of Efrin, visited her village in occupied Efrin for Eid al-Adha
I said this a long time ago. One of the obvious reasons America is losing influence in Iraq is its Ambassador to Turkey, Tom Barrack.
A man with no strong background in politics or diplomacy, his mind appears more focused on business dealings and lobbying — especially for Qatar — than on advancing clear U.S. interests.
When you listen to his comments about the Middle East, they often align more with the positions of Qatar and Turkey than with traditional American policy.
The problem is that Barrack serves not only as U.S. Ambassador to Turkey, but also as Special Envoy for Syria and plays a key role in Iraq policy. This is the man the United States is relying on to shape its strategy in the region.
Politics is not a game for amateurs. It requires deep knowledge, experience, and strategic understanding. The U.S. needs a serious diplomat with real expertise in the Middle East — not a lobbyist — in these critical positions.
Without that change, America risks losing not just Iraq, but the entire region to Iranian influence. https://t.co/CF374LBn1f

Israeli project “Sufa 53” in southern Syria
We confirmed through the Israeli Defense Forces media office the existence of an Israeli project known as “Sufa 53.” The project has reportedly received approval from the cabinet, the political leadership, the military leadership, and the Knesset.
The project focuses on security and engineering operations along the separation line in the Golan Heights. It effectively gives Israel the ability to expand its presence in the Golan as far as it deems necessary. However, the project itself is not new. Work reportedly began in 2022, before Assad’s fall, as Israeli planners anticipated the direction events in Syria were heading.
Israeli right-wing and security circles had already been discussing military roads, barriers, trenches near the border, and forward positions inside Syrian territory, driven by fears that the collapse of the Syrian regime and the resulting instability could create security threats for Israel.
The project has now evolved further. It reportedly includes military roads, embankments, new fortifications, and advanced observation points capable of monitoring even Damascus. This phase is said to have strong backing from the Israeli military and intelligence establishment.
In practical terms, the project involves military roads, trenches extending deep into Quneitra, dirt barriers, bases, and surveillance and early-warning systems established inside Syrian territory.
The declared objective is defensive: preventing infiltration or attacks originating from Syria. According to the Israeli General Staff, the project is presented as a defensive security belt designed to stop militants, Iran-linked groups, or Hezbollah-affiliated elements from approaching the border.
The Julani regime reportedly attempted to reassure Israel by saying, “We will not allow anything to threaten your security,” but these assurances apparently were not taken seriously.
Regarding Suweida, the Julani regime was reportedly informed that Suweida is considered a red line, and that military or security operations there would not be permitted.
According to the Israeli position, the people of Suweida should have a form of self-administratio, whether described as federalism or decentralization, with their own local security and administrative structures. Meanwhile, Sheikh Hikmat al-Hijri has stated that he rejects the Julani terror regime and has called for Suweida´s independence.
This is how the Turkish occupying state was shelling and destroying the homes of Kurdish civilians in the city of Şırnak.
We will never forget this terrorism against the Kurds
I Just received this magnificent video from journalist colleague @GuldemBilal recently filmed in the mighty snowy Kurdish mountains of the Amed region.
The wonderful nature of Kurdistan shines through truly a breathtaking view. 😊 🤩 🥹
