Recruits: Choosing the school that fits you best academically, athletically, and socially is the most important thing. If you’re not at the right place, you won’t achieve your maximum success.
How to help determine “fit.”
1) Academics: The most important part of being a student-athlete is earning your degree. Why? According to APLU:
*College graduates are half as likely to be unemployed as their peers who only have a high school degree.
*Typical earnings for bachelor’s degree holders are 84 percent higher than those whose highest degree is a high school diploma.
*College graduates on average make $1.2 million more over their lifetime.
Do the schools you’re looking at offer the major you want? Research their alumni and student success rates. Make sure the college can help you enter the career field of your choice upon graduation.
2) Coaching style: Some athletes need a coach who is intense and yells. Most need someone who build relationships and hold them accountable. There are aggressive coaches, passive coaches, and everything in-between. Know your needs and the coaching style of each staff recruiting you.
3) System/Style of play: Some coaches want to play fast; others play slow. Some programs run complex action; others simplify very well. Every program defends differently. Do your strengths line up with the coach’s style of play? Is that how you want to play throughout college?
4) Accountability: Most coaches require attendance for all classes, study halls, community service and more. Other coaches run a loose ship that allows for more flexibility. Can you handle your business in a program of accountability or do you need to be part of less strict program?
5) Location: Moving a long ways from home isn’t for everyone. There are benefits to distance. There are also positives attending school in a region where you are established and have family and friends close by. Do you desire a rural campus, college town, mid-sized community, or large city?
6) Level/Conference: Would you rather be a star at a lower level or a role player or walk-on at a higher level? What is most important to you, level or playing time/opportunity? Additionally, most conferences within the same level showcase different styles of play, game day environments, travel and more.
7) Depth chart: As a recruit, where do you immediately fit in? If you join a program which is starting underclassmen at your position you may not play much for multiple years. How important is early playing time for you? Is redshirting something you are willing to do? What is your pathway for playing time based on the current depth chart of each program recruiting you?
8) Financials/Scholarship: Going to a school for $50,000/year may be the right move for some but affordable or free education, on scholarship, is the goal for most. Don’t make it all about money though. Don’t choose the wrong fit just for the larger scholarship.
Two important questions to ask yourself during recruitment:
A) “If the coaching staff is fired, retires, or moves on, is this the right school for me?”
B) “If I have a career-ending injury and can’t play anymore, would I still enjoy attending school here?”

Learning about different specialty stores in Spain in Sp.3 @SmDutchNation. With a class of 12 chicas, my girls are always looking for a reason to bring in food! So they set up different stores and went shopping for our lunch! #godutch#alwaysareasontocelebrate
!Feliz cumpleaños Brandon Brown! Finished reading Brandon Brown Quiere Un Perro today in Span1! Had a fun game of Globos and a mini fiesta to practice our vocab! We loved the book! @CarolGaab@FluencyMatters @SmDutchNation #CI#godutch
❤️when my upper level students tell me stories of how they interacted with Spanish native speakers at a restaurant, at their job, etc. They are so proud of themselves and so am I! #proudteachermoment#godutch
Gracias a @km_spanish for the fun idea Mascotas con Play-doh! My Ss ❤️’d chatting about their pets in TL! They were sad to put them back in the jar! #CI#godutch
Interpersonal convos in Sp 1 today! Thankful for my upper level Ss that helped facilitate the small group stations. Loved the interactions! 💙 Impressive how many level 1 Ss refused to speak English! #proudteachermoment@AdiosTextbook @SmDutchNation
First day back after an amazing #ACTFL19 and couldn’t resist playing some impromptu cup volleyball from @profeashley 1st period with questions about Día de Gracias! Note to self 🤔... plastic solo cups are really loud! 😬 #itsallihad#sorryneighbors#sorrynotsorry
@magistradee @profeashley Use 1 cup per group of 2. Ss “volley” the cup back & forth. The S who messes up the volley or misses the cup chooses 1 ? from the 5 posted on the board to answer & talk about with their partner. They can be about anything. I chose to have them chat about thanksgiving vacay!
