Madonna on a bus, New York, 1979.... Photographed by Dan Gilroy, who was her boyfriend at the time. This was the time before she became famous.

Madonna arrived in New York City in 1978 with little money and ambitions of building a career in dance and music. Like many aspiring artists of the era, she worked various low-paying jobs while becoming involved in the city’s downtown creative scene during a period of major cultural change in Manhattan.

Late-1970s New York was experiencing financial decline, high crime rates, and widespread urban decay, yet it also became a center for influential music and art movements including punk, disco, hip-hop, and new wave. Clubs such as CBGB, Danceteria, and Studio 54 helped launch artists who would later dominate global pop culture during the 1980s.

By the mid-1980s, Madonna had become one of the world’s biggest music stars, reshaping pop music, fashion, music videos, and celebrity culture.

Madonna’s self-titled debut album released in 1983 included hits like “Holiday” and “Borderline,” helping establish MTV-era pop stardom and launching one of the most commercially successful music careers in history.
