Crazy that this is getting barely any coverage. This year’s European Press Prize was just awarded to an investigative report by the Dutch newspaper De Volkskrant. It is entitled “What the Wounds Tell” and in it the journalists Maud Effting and Willem Feenstra document the cases of 114 children in Gaza under the age of 15 who were struck by a single bullet to the head or chest. Almost all of them died or were left severely disabled. They chose to document only the cases of boys and girls under the age of 15 (though often much younger: aged 3, 4 or 7) because these are children who can be immediately identified as such. “A single bullet in these parts of the body is a clear indication that these children were deliberately targeted“, the two journalists write.

It is very hard to navigate what we should do about AI on a basic level because it’s dominated by a bunch of private firms whose fundamental interests have nothing to do with what you or I want. They’re terraforming our planet and every market on it to yield to their structural desire(s), even if individuals & groups within have other ideas. But the need for more capital than exists is the opportunity here! A moratorium, a stock tax, nationalization, financial repression, all of these should be understood as tools we cling to only so long as they advance the cause of abandoning the path we are locked on. We need anything that can give us as much space and time to figure out an alternative that is not simply a gentler form of what the firms have already proposed for their own sake!
