A character from a game I was never any good at
He has a leap ability bound to E and his unique trait is that he can evolve his abilities. When he evolves his leap, he sprouts wings.
Fun fact, Mutadon's internal anatomy you can see here is actually included in the final render, to be able to see glimpses of its bones and soft tissue beneath its thin, semi-translucent skin during backlit shots
@Riamus01 This promo render specifically, being lit from the dead front, is probably the antithesis to how the skin translucency was meant to be seen, i.e. in strongly backlit shots.
@Riamus01@AnotherKaiju That area along with face and feet/hands is usually handled by modelling and animation depts. through hand sculpted muscle shapes, for better control over the final look. The skulls are just attachment points for neck muscles.
We are very much aware that the jowls are muscles.
In the end, though the skin translucency was toned down a lot, all shots still feature the working internal anatomy. You can catch a glimpse of a shifting shadow in its chest in this shot if you look hard enough, but the effect is overall very subtle. Blink and you'll miss it!
Fun fact #2, we weren't sure how far they would want to push the skin translucency originally, so to cover all bases, its simulation setup has a full set of internal organs and even a beating heart!❤️
I interviewed at Weta FX in 2023, but then the strikes forced the industry into a global hiring freeze, so I haven't ticked that box quite yet, but who knows. There's still two sequels to go.
This artistry poured into this one movie quite literally shaped my entire career.
As I got out of the theatre 15 years ago, I said I was going to be a vfx artist on the then yet-to-be-announced sequels. 8 years later, I started working professionally in vfx. Specifically, I wanted to animate creature muscles. Today, I animate creature muscles for a living.
@lalolonies Haha, that'd be awesome, indeed. A man can dream, but I'm afraid not much more than that at this time. I scratch that itch by making short little standalone snippets as personal projects when I can.
