Digital collectibles, companies, and brands @dapperlabs@CandyDigital@PaniniAmerica@NBATopShot@NFLALLDAY@NHLBreakaway are missing massive money right now—and it’s hiding in plain sight.
Listen on 1.5 - 2x.
Retail figured this out decades ago:
60–80% of purchases at big box and grocery stores are unplanned
Amazon drives ~35% of revenue from recommendations (and the data of what buyers like and want is something that digital platforms really have an advantage over physical with).
But digital collectibles platforms still split everything up.
That’s like going to a store for a baseball glove…
then getting back in your car to drive 5 miles to the other side of town to buy a basketball.
It kills:
- impulse buying
- cross-selling
- collector momentum
Meanwhile Panini has:
👉 one login
👉 multiple sports
👉 constant cross-buying
Come for Messi → leave with LeBron. That success is reflected in their collector base and floor prices.
And we’re not even using the data yet:
- recommend what collectors actually like
suggest trades
- use data to help collectors complete sets
That’s another 30–50% upside on top.
Now combine that with:
- finite supply
- competitive collectors
- dopamine-driven buying
…and you don’t get incremental growth.
You get parabolic markets.
The Ohtani rookies are a great example. I bought 8 between $100 and $200 because I viewed @CandyDigital as a suppressed market above. The owner of the 17/ had bought it for $500 and his friend bought 8 more. That means there are 17 of the 24 not in packs locked up, and the floor is now $900. And that's in a down market for Candy before self custody or anything of the things above happen. Considering that Ohtani's physical /25 /50 rookies regularly go for $500k +- and there's a whole lot more of them overall, I'd say that these digital ones have a long ways to run.
We don’t need more assets.
We need:
👉 one marketplace w/ less friction for ease of use to increase buying among existing collectors and make it easy for new collectors
👉 better use of data to make buyer/seller recommendations
That’s when prices REALLY unlock 🚀🚀🚀
This is a ways off still, but the direction we are headed to and I do not plan to even consider selling before.
