It was obvious what she thought. She scolded Richard and reminded him that people died and to show some respect. Richard shot back. "People died in the LA riots. Should we respect them, too?" Richard got kicked out of class. The early 90's were wild.
This is a random memory, but when I was in middle school, they announced the OJ Simpson trial verdict through the PA system. When they announced "not guilty," a kid named Richard jumped from his desk and yelled, "We WON!" The class erupts in laughter. My teacher was pissed.
Mind you, the predominantly brown classroom filled with 5 or 6th graders is repeating their parents' complex thoughts and feelings in the 90s. My English teacher was Italian, and I'm sure she had a different opinion, though she couldn't share that with the class.
