Forecast time.

EU will make a trade deal with the US to access SOTA models and in return will start regulating the Chinese models on EU territory.

Here's why.

GLM 5.2 was just released - a gargantuan open weights model from China, scoring higher than Fable on some of the benchmarks and equal scores on the majority of the rest. It's 10 times cheaper to use than Fable, and has extremely fast token generation speed at 300 tps.

This comes at a time when both OpenAI and Anthropic were looking for the influx of cash from the IPOs to continue running their models at the current price point.

With a competitor such as GLM 5.2 and at a significant risk of regulation, both IPOs are bound to take a hit. In this situation, both companies are driven ever closer to the government, looking for financing and lessening of the regulations.

If EU/US drop regulations - they will lose the AI game. EU/US companies are cash-limited, while the Chinese companies are limited only by the national energy generation capacity.

Therefore only more regulations are feasible. To maintain the price of the IPOs, the US companies need the EU market and they need it without the Chinese competition. The EU needs SOTA AI at any cost, if it picks China as the main partner - it will spark another trade war with the US and lose even more military protection. Of course, the US government wouldn't be doing that for free and will likely demand more ownership, more control and more involvement in both of it's frontier labs.

So yeah, strap in, homies, the regulations are coming and we're likely to see the Chinese companies restricted from the EU market before either Anthropic or OpenAI do their IPOs - late Q3 or early Q4, with EU citizens being included into the privileged caste of Fable subscribers.

Don't rush into downloading the Chinese models though. It's impossible to completely ban them. As they are open by design - any company can fork the weights, fine-tune them and sell it as an EU product, running on EU servers.
