@blackspyproject Gov't should be there to help and incentivize "pivoting" through retooling and reeducation. Starting over sucks, but in a future where large in-person gatherings are less common, why should a conference center be kept afloat with public funds? What am I missing here?
@blackspyproject I am torn on this. The world is a dynamic and changing place. And when change happens, naturally we aren't in this together and there are winners and losers. Instilling gov't programs to keep potentially obsolete businesses afloat doesn't better prepare us for the future.
@blackspyproject The world is indifferent, devoid of objective meaning. Take solace this is the way things have always been and how you feel is largely dictated by your own attitudes, which you can train (with work).
@blackspyproject Very interesting, I did not know that. In a less centralized, future world (where perhaps some cryptocurrency has a significant part of international commerce), does this effect only increase? Is the 2% historical return on real estate too low of any estimate going forward?
I find it infuriating that Amazon is now renting electronic books (with a hefty markup if you want to buy)! The beauty of digitizing is that the cost of copying is basically zero! ๐๐
Paul Graham once wrote an essay talking about how to predict the future. In it, he said don't try to predict the future, just be sensitive to the changes happening around you. That seems especially important now.
If correct, it will be fascinating to see what supplants the standard path for the last 40 years. Online, remote learning will play a big part. But how do replace the stuff learned outside of class?
There are predictions floating around that this pandemic and subsequent lockdown might be what finally shifts the attitude towards higher education. Bubble might be bursting, as many low-tier colleges don't survive.
