In a landmark ceremony marking a new era of cooperation , representatives from the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS) and the European Union (EU) convened in Apia, Samoa, on November 15, 2023, to sign the long-awaited Samoa Agreement.

The legally binding document, which succeeds the Cotonou Agreement, formalizes a renewed partnership between the two entities, paving the way for strengthened collaboration on a range of critical issues, including sustainable development, climate change, human rights, and democratic governance.

OACPS Secretary-General HE. Georges Rebelo Pinto Chikoti met with Hon Peter Kenilorea Jr, former President of the OACPS Parliamentary Assembly, in Honiara, Solomon Islands, to discuss parliamentary arrangements post-Cotonou, with a focus on the Pacific Regional Parliamentary Assembly. 

The crucial  meeting also addressed the significant challenges faced by the region, particularly Small Island Developing States (SIDS), and stressed the importance of comprehensive support.

Secretary-General Chikoti commended  Hon Kenilorea for his remarkable achievements during his presidency, particularly his exceptional leadership in formulating the rules of procedure for the Joint Parliamentary Assembly (JPA).

H.E. Georges Rebelo Chikoti, the Secretary-General of the OACPS, commended the Solomon Islands-based organization, Kastom-Gaden, for their outstanding efforts in empowering farmers in the region.

In particular, Secretary-General Chikoti praised Kastom-Gaden's initiatives targeting the youth, such as their collaboration with schools to develop agricultural curriculum, and their commendable work in empowering women across 90 villages.

He emphasized the significance of Kastom-Gaden as one of the most important small projects supported by the OACPS and the EU, highlighting the successful integration of over seven thousand farmers. Each farmer benefits from the expertise and techniques provided by Kastom-Gaden to improve production and crop quality.

Secretary-General Chikoti was impressed by the project coordinator's understanding of the positive impact of OACPS-EU support. The funding has facilitated the enhancement of seeds, agricultural techniques, and the inclusion of farmers in the project. It has also provided valuable learning opportunities for rural farmers to actively engage in the initiatives.

Furthermore, Secretary-General Chikoti applauded Kastom-Gaden for not only increasing production but also for producing superior seeds and environmentally-friendly products. He acknowledged their use of compost, which eliminates the need for fertilizers and allows for the production of organic and healthy fruits.

Secretary-General Chikoti considers Kastom-Gaden to be an exemplary model. The organization's approach reduces reliance on imported fertilizers, preserves the environment, and promotes overall well-being.
